A/C Vent problem, black pieces of honey comb like filter blow out of A/C vents. How do I fix this?

Here's a pic of the foam in my dash heating and cooling vents

2004 Chevrolet express 3500 does not have A filter for the cab or a filter on the incoming air that comes in through the area behind the hood in the center of the van. You can see the vent intake or vacuum operated blending door if you look through the plastic screen part of this trim piece with a flashlight it is down and to the left. My Xpress 3500 Cutaway has a trail light motorhome attached I'm assuming that this is also true for the 2500 van. I found this out the hard way this area got filled up with sand and leaves there's a drain at the bottom and it was clogged the blending door or vent door allowed the sand leaves to go directly into the blower motor and then next the heater core this all had to be washed out and the heater core sucked clean with a vacuum since it is nearly impossible to access it through the passenger side of the cab I removed the blower motor, cleaned that and then used a vacuum with an attached piece of PVC pipe three-quarter inch and a 90 on the end and carefully put it through the box where the blower was and into the side where you can see the heater core itself.. the only thing I was able to do from the passenger side was pull the cover down and out exposing the ac coil enough to blow compressed air through it back towards the heater core . If I'm not mistaken after you remove the screws holding this pice on the passenger side below the dashboard , where a glove box would of been there are screws that are not accessible you are directed to cut the top side seam to remove it . This I found from reading the instructions for replacing the
heater core ,I'm hoping to find some sort of filter offered to fix the intake, if not I think a piece of washable filter material cut accordingly and placed in front of the vaccume actuated blending /vent door , the 1" thick green or blue hvac washable material is what I am referring to . You would need to take the windshield wipers off and the plastic piece below that spans most of the area between the back of the hood and the bottom of the windshield you could put a pice ofthe washable filter material here in front of the vent door . Does a 2004 Lincoln Aviator have an interior air conditioner filter? Left side vent is blowing little air, have added coolant, didn't help with the blowing but did with the cooling some. Mechanic said he couldn't find filter

Ron- I just fixed this same problem 2 days ago. On the driver's side near the firewall there's a T- vacuum line. The 2 inch piece of hose between the T and the vacuum line itself had worn out. I replaced this piece of tube and now the directional vent control is working fine.

Most vehicles today have what is called a blend door and motor in the heater box. The blend door motor comes on when you select a setting. It actuates the blend door and directs the floe of air to the proper place. Sometimes the blend door gets stuck from debris that falls down through the vents. Also it is possible that the blend door motor is bad or simply came unplugged. Some of these motors are powered by electric automotive current and some are powered by vacum hoses. It is possible for the vacum hoses to break or become unplugged. Check all these options. One of my kids dropped a comb down my upper vent and it blocked the blend door from directing the air flow. That was an easy fix and I hope yours is a simple. I hope this helped you. Roger

try changing the cabin filter, as that can restrict air flow

Most likely the air filter located in under the dashboard has rotted apart. This will continue until all the pieces have blown out or you change the filter.

My first thought is to have the Catalytic converter inspected. Many time the converters will have the insides break away and begin to float around, the insides of the converters look like a honey comb and after the engine is good and hot the dislodged piece will adhere to the other parts of the honey comb thus making the rattle go away.

Sounds like you have a supply vacuum problem. When you lose supply vacuum to the control head it defaults to defrost.

over time age gets to the vent hoses... on some vehicles the hoses dry rot and fall apart.. on others they may just somehow come undone... only real way to tell.... *shivers... is to take the dash apart.. :(
