Hey WendyandRon..there is 3 types of smoke..that comes from a combustion engine that has a problem..there is black smoke..which means it running excessively rich with fuel..the next is a blue smoke.which means oil consumption..which could mean the engine is worn..but not always..there is other factors..and then white smoke..from a bown head gasket..and if ya hang out at the rear exhaust pipe..you probably can tell me what it really smells like..and we can go from there

The person that wrote ya about the valve stem seals is a possibility.but it would puff out smoke everytime you started the car..if it sat over night..but i have had worked on cars and trucks that has had oil leaks..usually from the valve covers and it would drip down the engine and make the inside smell like burnt oil..and with your hesitation..that could be several things..but i would look at ya PVC valve and make sure it isnt stopped up..if this dont help..write back..Keith

i know you would like a simple fix..but ..ya might want to take it to a shop and they can do a compression test and a vacuum test and can tell you how heathy your engine is...Keith

I have a 1989 chevy silverado. my dad bought it new and never drove it. he wanted to pay it off first. after 5 years it had 15K miles on it. it then smoked everytime he cranked it after it had sit a while. The lack of driving it caused the rubber valve seals to dry rot. so now when it sits, oil seeps down between the valve and the seal and enters the piston chamber. when he cranks it, a poof of blue smoke blows out the exhaust but quickly disappears after the the initial poof of smoke.
this may be your problem also if you have abnormally low milage on the vehicle

floods, wot cranking cuts fuel and starts any flooded engine,
it's overheating that wins the First order failures rule sets.
nothing else matters. cure that first.! find cause! first.

sounds (im deaf there, lol) that smoke is out tail pipe end and dissipates fast and is not smoke but steam, , oil smoke smells like burning oil and lingers. steam smells sweet like burning Antifreeze.
AF steam is a blown head gasket or far worse.
do a compression test first to see if it's even worth fixing????
most are NOT. (unless free labor, sure)

first learn steam from smoke
serious , watch moms tea pot. see that steam goes away fast.and very uniquely , now watch burning oil.
remove dip stick, drop the drip of oil on hot exhaust manifold.
smell that, that is oil burning, and lingers.
this will last you a life time of blown engines..... just one look and bingo. (my instructor in 1965 did in front of class)

got oil in the AF/ CARBON chunks in same.
water in oil, ? pan, engine . milky oil.
rad leak down test fail? can be lots of reasons even a cracked block.or head. not just gaskets.

Mitsibushi pajero oil light time

White SWEET smelling smoke, or white OILY smelling smoke? If it's white thick SWEET smelling smoke, you have a blown head gasket - that's the smell of antifreeze burning in the engine, which it should NEVER do. If it's white OILY smelling smoke (smells a lot like diesel), then you're getting too much fuel into the cylinders.

If it's sweet-smelling smoke (antifreeze), pull the oil dipstick & check the oil level. If the oil level is HIGH and the oil looks like a mocha milkshake, that's absolutely conclusive - that's what happens when antifreeze gets into your oil, and it's nasty corrosive to engine parts.

I'm not at all surprised that the oil light is on if it won't start - you won't get much oil pressure until the engine is running.

Did smoke have an electrical or oil smell? Pull starter and see if gears are stripped. Cheaper to replace starter than to replace flywheel.

It has a bad mis and running rich dark foul smelling smoke what's wrong? 1991 chevy v6 s10

possibly a faulty injector for the miss but if you have a head/headgasket problem it would account for the exhaust. Do a compression test and radiator pressure test to eliminate that area of concern

I changed the oil in my 2001 Impala 3.8 and noticed the oil had a gasoline smell.

Some smell is normal if it has been quite sometime between oil changes. This happens more with short distance driving.

How does it get there?

Through cylinder blow by when the engine is cold. The piston rings leak minuscule amounts into the oil which add up over time.

If you are having no other running issues (IE black/drk grey smoke out tail pipe with oil residue on pipe tip) I would not be alarmed by this.

Constant smoke from tail pipe.

If its smoking that bad you should be able to tell if its oil or antifreeze by the smell, stand behind the car as its running, if its white and you smell a sweet smell its antifreeze if its blue and smells like a oil refinery its oil.

Engine oil

It is not unusual for an older truck to be burning a little oil. It is burning very little so you will not smell burnt oil or see blue smoke in the exhaust. But the oil burn does add up and you may notice a drop on the oil dipstick after a few weeks. On a 9 year old truck under normal working conditions will burn a little oil. If you are having to add 1 liter between oil changes, that is ok, just shows normal engine ware. 2 Liters is acceptable between oil changes if the truck does a lot of heavy pulling or work. 3 or more liters indecates a problem, but at that rate, you should be able to smell oil and see blue smoke.
