My engine temperature guage is only working part time. When it works the car starts and idles fine. When its not working, I have to hold the gas pedal down to start and after starting the car idles 4 to 500 rpms above normal.
Sounds like it's one of two things. First I would have someone check for a stuck thermostat. If the thermostat is clogged or stuck it can mess with the engine temp and make things rev higher than usual. If it's not the thermostat, it sounds like maybe a temp sensor is malfunctioning. Either way, don't put off getting it checked! Hot engines cause expensive problems!!!
Perhaps the culprit is a faulty sending unit. Try having it replaced and see what happens. If you can do it yourself, so much the better... assuming that you know what you're doing.
SOURCE: IDLE PROBLEM
Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
SOURCE: won't start, engine wont rev above 2000rpm
Have the alternator tested. You are providing a low charge to the battery when you jump it and when taking it above 2K RPM requires more amperage resulting in the engine dying and the rough idle
SOURCE: I have an 06 impala and lately as soon as i start
I suspect it to be a waterpump problem. I have a '06 Impala LT and it is doing the same thing with the exact same symptoms. Do you also notice a puddle of coolant under the engine after you turn the engine off and return? Thats another symptom of a bad waterpump or a pump thats going bad. I am in the process of getting it checked out and will post the results when I get a mechanic to look at it. But to me it sounds like a waterpump problem so I'd check that out!
SOURCE: 1998 cavalier Z24 quad 4. Very hard to start,
The first thing I would check is fuel pressure. I have a hunch you have a leaking fuel pressure regulator. It is located on the end of the fuel rail on the passenger front of the engine. It will have a vacuum line running to it. Remove the vacuum line and see if gas comes out when you start the engine (sometimes all you have to do is turn the key on and sometimes it will be wet when you pull the hose off). If any of those are true than replace the regulator for sure.
