Take the wiper/cowl module off and there will be much more room to work. The alternator need not be removed.

Which engine components should be replaced while the engine is out and to be set back in

Mileage would be the best info givin in this scenario. Not many parts need replaced. Spark plugs are always easier with engine out especially front wheel drive vehicles. If over 100,000 miles maybe plugs and wires.

Car want fire up

what engine ? what displacement?
USA? car?
it cranks robustly but will not start the engine.
the classic 100year test on gas engines is:
1: lost compression.
2:lost spark
3: lost fueling or flooded.
in that order. most folks skip #1 ,due to hope deal and no guage.

and then check spark got spark to all 6 or 8 spark plugs>
yes, good. some 94 have a distributor, is it loose>?
no, fix spark.
3: are spark plug tips dry, try test fuel , spray fuel.
3a: are spark pug tips soaking wet in fuel;?
yes, its flooded, (wideopen throttle, cranking) unfloods it.
keep in mind, flooding can happen on 1 cylinder only. MPI
or all.

When the car gets hot i cant go more than 2 blocks before it just shuts off. Help!

You have not run the most important test, that is a scan of the engine control electronics for fault codes.

How do you get to the spark plugs that are toward the firewall?

A little hard to get to are they? It makes life a lot easier if you remove the ignition control module and coil assemblies from the valve cover.

Most people freak out when we professional repair technicians quote prices for replacing spark plugs. They say WHAT??? Your're going to charge me THAT MUCH?.... JUST for spark plugs???

Now you know WHY!

Change spark plugs on 1998 Malibu V6 3.1

on the 3.1, it is easier to change back plugs if you remove the coil packs. so you can reach the plugs from the top of engine. it almost seems impossible but this will work. it will give more room to work.

Spark plug removal

Use my advice at your own risk. I will not be held responsible for what you do to your vehicle. For Jeep Cherokees with a 4.0 engine; (if you are standing in front of the vehicle looking back at the engine compartment) the spark plugs are on the left side / the same side as your battery. What look like spark plugs on the right side of the engine are actually your fuel injectors. On the exact opposite side of the engine block, all 6 spark plugs are held in place with a long rectangular box (called a coil pack) that has 3 small raised boxes on it. The coil pack is the length of the engine block and about 1 1/2 wide. There are 4 large approx 1/2 bolts that hold this coil pack in place. There is a plug on the back end / closest to the fire wall where you can upplug this coil pack but I couldn't unplug it. Simply, remove the 4 bolts holding the coil pack in place, lift the coil pack away from the engine block and the spark plugs are exposed. The boots that attach to the spark plugs are "fixed" in to the coil pack. Replace your spark plugs some type of using anti-sieze compound, adjust your gap, and torque to 19 lbs. NOTE: use dielectric grease on plug boots and coil pack ends of wires. can also be used on plug in bulbs. The above answer is great but if they are platnum plugs dont bother setting gap because you usually don't get a spec anyways and you do more harm than good. The gap is preset
