Rear end gear ratio

I have a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 4wd v8 5.3l. I need how to find out what the gear ratio is to order a new rear end, the one i have has just exploded.

You can count the teeth on the ring gear and divide that # by the tooth count on the pinion. An example is: ring gear 100, pinion 10 ...100divided by 10 is 10, expressed as 10 to one. (fake #) your diff is likely a 3 series such as 3.23 to 1. or a four series such as 4.11 to 1. If you have four wheel drive it is critical to match exactly. if not you can get better performance by changing ratio to something that better fits your needs. 4 series pull loads well, 3 series are better on fuel.(depending upon terrain)

climb under the truck and on one of the bolts of the rear end pumpin( the round part in center of rear end where the gears ar ) there will be a metal tag with the ratio on it.

I got a 1999 chevy silverado 4x4 and the rear end was bad so i put anothr one in it and now when i put it in 4wd it drags to rear tires and i checked the gears and they are the same 373 gear ratio as what...


WELL IF YOU CHANGE THE REAREND THAT DONT HAVE NOTHING TO DO W/PUTTING IT 4 WHEEL DRIVE BECAUSE ITS THE FRONT ONE THAT LOCKS IN . MAYBE YOU BRAKES ARE DRAGGING ON THE REAR END ADJUST BRAKES AN SEE IF THAT HELPS .

If you want to find the ratio then you can remove the rear differential cover and spin the wheels by hand to turn the gears and find the number on the carrier gear. The numbers will be what you need to tell what the ratio is.

I need to find the gear ratio of the rear end and the tag is missing. What #'s of the tag in the glovebox tell u what the ratio is?


GT4=3:73
GT5=4:10
GU6=3:42

If there's a "J" number with two digits after it make a note of it also. Theres approximately 40 different combinations of rear axle assembly.

JF7=Vacuum power brakes
JH1=Hydraulic power brakes, etc...

I have a noise coming from the rear end, sounds like the the body is banging on in the rear. What could be the problem?


Hi our 2000 chevy silverado 4wd 8cy truck was doing the same thing the mechanic checked it out and said it was ther rear end gears they need replacing will cost 1200.00 bucks and take 2 days.Truck will not move at all now gears broken
