Check your wheel bearings and ball joints. Checking the wheel bearings: stand next to the front tire, crouch down, put your hands on the top of the tire, and try to rock the top of the tire by pushing the top of the tire away from you and pulling the top of the tire toward you (rock it hard and fast). do both front tires. Any noise or sideways movement of the tire is bad, (Bearings are worn) and needs to be repaired. Then, stand at the front corner of the car, and push down on the front corner of the car repeatedly (rocking the corner of the car up and down (Rock it up and down Hard) If you hear the popping noise your ball joints need to be replaced. If these tests don't work but you still get the popping noise when you drive, take the car to a mechanic. Popping noises from the front end of a car is dangerous. If anything happens up there, you could lose your steering!
Inspect your tire. Look for any bubbles or knots on the side of the tire. Look for any damage to the tread. A bubble or knot can mean that you hit a curb, pothole or another object on the road. Bubbles and knots can sometimes be repaired, but more often lead to the need for replacement of the tire.
Think about what you were doing when you first noticed the tire noise. If you just hit a pothole or a curb, chances are you have a bubble on your tire and that it needs to be fixed or replaced. If you had recently spun out of control or had to make a forced turn quickly, you might have an alignment problem and the noise might not be a tire issue at all.
Listen to the noise while you're driving. If it's a repeated thud on regular intervals, you likely have a severe knot problem on your tire. Take the car to a tire repair place as soon as possible. Tire knots may not appear serious at first but can be potentially dangerous.
If you have no others noise especially into turns (it would be a suspension problem, i.e., cv joints) then it is a tire issue.
You mentioned the noise was from the left (drivers side) front. The compressor is on the passenger side in association with the engine compartment. Question, once the noise starts does it continue while stopped or only while moving?
most probably a torn lower suspension arm rubber bush that would not show up if the car was on a 4 post hoist
there is a problem there as the noise would not be evident if there was nothing wrong
different tire pressures will give different noise when hit with a tire lever ( a trick used by truck drivers to check for flat/ under inflated tires

If your turning your car to the right when it make the noise or the Left Listen and find out because which ever way the noise is loudest usually meaning that is the side going bad, Thats the rule Usually some cars and trucks have fronts and rear bearings, But I think it is a wheel bearing, Have a mechanic or a friend that may turn some wrench's Check it out for you.
