Question about 1992 Jeep Cherokee Sport

Losing power 98 TJ wrangler

Got a 98 TJ wrangler. 147,000 2.5 4cyl. 4WD
For about 2 weeks now the engine seems to be losing power. Just took it on a 6 hour road trip and had a hard time accelerating. It would hold 70mph on flat ground but lose power fast going uphill. As this problem started it sounded like a small exhaust leak. Like you could hear air escaping timed with the engine. That sound only occurred at low RPM but has shifted to high RPM as of this last trip. And is starting to sound more like an old farm truck. To make it all worse there is a small oil leak that seems new. Any ideas? Once it cools off I am going to check the plugs, wires and cap.

Sounds as if converter on exhaust is getting plugged up. have it checked and replaced. That will force exhaust out ahead of it where ordinarily it would flow with less pressure. Oil leak is a separate item.

Cold air intake installed... 1999 Wrangler TJ (2.5l 5-speed 4wd). Installed a cold air instake system and throttle body spacer about a week ago. So far it feels like the Jeep runs smoother (less sputter)....

ur putting in more air getting more low end horsepower but when u let in more air the truck is choking back because ur not letting it exhaust as much need to also redo exhaust system so when the truck takes a deep breath[going faster more air in ]it can exhale the same and not have all that back pressure thats why ur loosing the higher end speed the truck can only exhaust a certain amount

Broken front coil spring

There were a lot of differences between a 98 TJ (Wrangler) and a 95 ZJ (Grand Cherokee). The grand cherokee is much heavier. Now might be the time for those "Off Road" upgrades you've been waiting on. And it is a good excuse.
Have a nice day!

99 jeep wrangler

how many miles down your TJ have?

backfire through exhaust or the intake manifold?

I would check:
1. 02 sensor
2. clean the throttle body thoroughly by decarbonizing it as well as cleaning the IAC and TPS.

what was done from the tune-ups?
