Question about 1987 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

I have had an intermittent problem with my 1987 toyota pickup\carb. Sometimes it wont idle, the problem has been getting worse, so today was tune-up day. I replaced plugs, cap & rotor and made sure the wires are in good shape. I also sprayed the carb with carburetor cleaner. It runs better, but still wont idle no matter how warm the engine is. I had the same issue a few weeks ago and found that the fuse in the ign. slot was blown. After changing the fuse it was fine. No such luck this time. Any ideas?

No. Your troubles are carburator related. Since you have no way of knowing what "some guy" did inside your carb you will likely have to take it to a shop that specializes in that kind of work. They may be able to adjust it so it works properly but it will probably have to be rebuilt again. Carburators are like a high maintenance girlfriend, very unforgiving if not treated just right. Hope this helps.

Turns over won't start. hasn't run in over a year and has had problems idling while cold. thinking carb needs cleaning... thoughts?

check and clean carb, try a lil carb fluid in carb to fire, also check the usual things for a tune up: cap & rotor, wires , also if its sat for a year add some clean fuel, condensation in fuel tanks and lines will wreak havoc, and will clog even brand new fuel filters

Vehicle: 1986 toyota "1 ton" pickup truck w/EFI L4 22-R engine. 245k miles After doing an ignition tune-up (plugs, wires, rotor, dist. cap, etc...), my rough idle issue has not subsided. Q: what should I...

I had a 1987 carburator truck and you are correct, dirt was the main issue. However, I think you may have the same issue, but in a different way. I would look at your fuel filer for starters and then run a can of injector cleaner through. If that does not help, maybe look at some new injectors. If you have 245K on this truck, I think your injectors may be tired and need to be replaced. It would appear that you have taken care of all the other issues. Another posibility is the throttle position sensor, (maybe)

Hope this was of some value.

1987 toyota truck, 22r, carb. sometimes goes into a mode where it

I had the same problem 3 weeks ago with my 87 Toyota truck. I posted the problem here and the response I got was- On the passenger side rear of the carburetor is a cold air idle valve, it has a two wire pigtail on it, remove the valve and clean it out with carb cleaner. Then screw it back in and all should be well. I did this, not really expecting much. My truck started right up and has been idling with no problem since. Try this and also your fuel filter.

1986 toyota pickup starts wont stay running

It seems there is some kind of air entering the carburator where its not required to do so or the idling soleniod switch is malfunctioning, thus not allowing the air to enter for the engine to idle .
Also recheck the vaccum pipes if they are correctly refitted per the schematics under the hood.More over remove the idling switch and blow some air to the hole probabley theres some kind of obstruction over there .

Good Luck.

Intermittent rough idle on 2002 toyota highlander

before you do this I would get some wooden qtips - the long ones auto detailers use. take off the air filtrer assembly and spray carb cleaner into the air\fuel intake and use the qtip to wipe out the inside of the intake. I had the same problem with my highlander a year ago and this fixed the problem.
