Gear shift will not move out of drive position

when I stopped the truck and attempted to put it in park the shifter would not go up. it would move down so I tried to lower it thinking that maybe it if i put the shifter in d1 it would go back up again but it went down farther then it should have and is stuck there and still in drive.

check under the truck on the drivers side of the tansmission. there is a cable that connects to a lever directly on the transmission. the cable should be connected to te lever.
