It could be a leaking hose, and the PS fluid is dropping on the hot exhaust. Check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir. If low or dry, look for a leak.
I don't know about the rattling-better have someone look at it.

Why does Power steering noise(severe) occur when engine gets hot?

you have to let the air out of the system, open the container from ,
steering liqiud.start engine, turn steeringwheel 7 times left and 7 times right all the way.refill if needed.its normal to hear loud sound when steering all the way to the end,but its best not to do that.its not made for steering all to the end.

There is a noise coming from the right-front wheel area during a left turn. It almost sounds like a tire-rub on the inner wheel-well cover, but it also makes this same noise when stationary while turning...

I had this same problem and the dealer could not reproduce the noise when I would take it in to get looked at. (during the day when the temperature was warm) So I decided to leave it over night and they test drove it in the morning when the temperature was cold and they heard the noise. It ended up bing the steering rack.

Power steering makes noise that changes with the speed of the car. The power steering goes out during any rain event. 150,000 miles, original engine.

If the P/S pump is not low of fluid and you have not just recently added P/S fluid then the pump needs replacing. If you recently added fluid to the pump and it was low it may have air in the system. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel fully to the right and fully to the left 10 times. This will remove any trapped air.

taiman, It sounds like you have a vacum leak. Does the engine idle a little rough and smooth out when you accelerate? Try this little test, get a empty spray bottle, fill it with warm water, the add one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, put the sprayer in and shake it up, then run the engine for a bit and shut it off and start spraying the solution in the area of your noise and when you hit it with the spray the noise will stop or change for a second. That will show you where the leak is and all you will have to do is repair it. Good Luck. quicbric (the volvo man)
