Question about 1997 BMW 328

My 98 328i was having the starter drop out and i was having to reset switch to get it to start. now the starter stay's ingaged when car starts, almost like the bendixs is stuck. does this sound like the starter or the relay

Sounds like you have permanant feed ?? or or the solonoid on top of the starter motor ,could also be the operating mechanism from the solonoid to the bendix

When i turn the ignition key it doesnt turn over and it makes a low tone clickin sound when ingaged doesnt seem to reach the starter. does this year have a neutral safety switch


How's the battery an connections an cables ? Do a voltage drop test on starter system before condemning some other part. Go on youtube an check out video on voltage drop testing a starter circuit. An yes it does have a PNP - park neutral position switch , but all so has a starter relay in the under hood fuse / relay box . When you turn the key to start B+ voltage goes from ignition switch to an through the PNP (if in p or n ) to the starter relay . If you know how to use a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter on the 20 volt's scale you could check for B+ voltage at the relay with key in the start position. This would save you the aggravation of changing the PNP and finding out that wasn't the problem. Find the starter relay in the under hood fuse / relay box , it will be marked on the inside of the lid . Pull the relay an look on the bottom ,you will see some numbers 30,87,85,86 or there will be a diagram on the side of the relay. 85 an 86 or the control side ,one of these will show B+ voltage with the key in the start position ! I start the car and the starter stay ingage I turn the ign switch off then try to start and the same thing happened few times until it start normal do you think its the starter / starter realy or ign


I would suspect that the solenoid contacts need replacing as they may be burning together. Pull the starter and have an accredited auto electrician bench test it.

Starter stays engaged park or nuetral


Powssible that there is always power to the inhibitor switch. It is the switch that only allows current to flow thru it when in park or neutral. Could be power is always present at the switch when it is in park or neutral. Check the ignition switch first and see if it is powering the start circuit all the time.

My 87 jeep starter stays ingaged when I try to start it


needs shimmed or the bendix is bad in the starter and not allowing to release. most likely just needs shimmed if it's a new starter, however you can get a bad starter (new or rebuilt)

Car only starts sometimes


The start circuit from the ignition switch to neutral safety switch to the solenoid on the starter might be bad. Look for power there at solenoid or at neutral safety switch when it doesn't want to crank over.

There are several things you need to check. Start by checking the alignment between the pinion gear of the starter and the flywheel. If that is loose or binding the starter will do this. Next, check teh starter relay to make sure it isn't faulting out. finally, if you have an Alarm installed, cut the power wire to the alarm or pull the fuse to make sure it isn't the Anti-Theft circuit malfunctioning and stopping it from starting.

96 cherokee key starts car but when you let go of key car stops


Check the ignition switch for proper adjustment and operation. Switch is above the column (attached to it) under the dash...sometimes easier to reach if you drop the column. (don't remove it, just take out the bolts that hold it to the dash)

shim the starter it sounds like it is staying engaged to the flywheel try shiming the starter

1997 expedition turn key on and starts it's self


Under the hood on the passenger fire wall you will see the starter solenoid.Unplug the small wire running to it and see if your problem goes away.If it does problem is ignition switch if it does not then tap the solenoid and see if it quits.If this takes care of it then solenoid is bad.
