In the right side trunk liner there is a fuel door release handle-pull towards the rear of the car with handle and it will release your fuel door

Not sure where the release is but sometimes you can find a manual override cable in the truck that will open the door.

I can't promise it, but in my 99 A4 there is a release cable in the trunk. I have to pull the trunk carpeting away on the side where the gas filler door is, and there's a red cable there that can be used as a manual release. I imagine your TT has one as well - look in the hatch on the side with the gas door, and pull the lining back - you'll probably have a release cable as well.

SOURCE: The gas cap cover on
most likely the cable that is linked to it has become either stretched or disconnected.
Go into the trunk if it is a 4dr model and if you can get your hand around to it.
Use needle nose pliers and try to pull the cable or the release.
If not and you are careful you can push away the latch from the outside with a screwdriver.
