Question about 1997 Cadillac Seville

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Cadillac STS and the A/C doesn't blow cold very often.. The compressor will run for about 5 seconds bringing the low side pressure down from ~95 psi to ~40 psi then it shuts off for about a minute at least (depending inversely on ambient external temp). It runs more often when the car is in the sun, but not nearly enough. I bypassed the compressor relay and the temp gets cold (50 degrees) and the pressure hovers around 38 psi. My Haynes manual says that there are multiple temp and pressure sensors on the A/C system.. Could it be an environmental control system problem not turning on the compressor, thinking that the temp is already too cold in the cabin? I'd hate to have to check all of the sensors manually.

I should also add that last year the blower motor would not run on occasion, furthering my assumption that there could be an issue with the environmental control panel in the vehicle..

Sounds more like the low pressure switch try that first u dont have to drain system for that,,,if it doesnt work they are two refridgerent temp sensors, u have to drain system first but u need to replace both so u know u have both coverd and dont have to go back in to system

Low freon will cause the compressor to short cycle, when the compressor runs the pressure in the low line is pulled down and the low pressure switch turns it off. Not running the pressure builds up and turns it back on. In the old days there was no low pressure switch, with no freon to carry the oil the compressor was destroyed.

Either connection is bad to low pressure sensor or pressure sensor is faulty.

it's either low (in spite of your readings) or your a/c clutch is not working correctly or you have too big an air gap in the clutch.
First, just disconnect the 2 pin connector from the a/c pressure cycling swithc and jumper the 2 pins with a wire to force the clutch to stay engaged. See if it blows cold then, and stays engaged. You can run this way for about 15 minutes before you have to pull the plug.

HIGH PRESSURE CUTOFF SWITCH LOCATED ON AC COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE LINE LEADING TO THE CONDENSOR.THE HIGH PRESSURE CUTOFF SWITCH WILL CUT OFF THE AC COMPRESSOR IF SYSTEM PRESSURE RISES TO HIGH CAUSED BY RESTRICTION IN THE REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT OR OVERHEATED CONDENSOR.MAKE SURE COOLING FAN IS RUNNING WHEN THE AC SWITCH IS ON.THE COOLING FAN KEEP CONDENSOR COOL, IF COOLING FAN DONT RUN.YOUR AC WILL STOP BLOWING COLD AIR.HAVE THE REFRIGERANT SYSTEM CHECK OUT.MAKE SURE YOUR LOW SIDE PRESSURE IS 10 - 37 PSI. THE HIGH SIDE PRESSURE SHOULD BE 112 - 210 PSI. CHECK THE AC COMPRESSOR CLUTCH FUSE AND RELAY.

If the car was retro fitted with R134a this was a common problem. There was a low side pressure sensor that needs to be changed. R134a runs different pressures than the r12.. When you go down the road the condenser cools off the system and the pressure drops below the minimum pressure. You need to make sure that the system is fully charged, not just cold to the feel. Both pipes coming out of the firewall need to be the same temp. this makes sure that the evaporator is flooded.
I hope this helped. Re-post if you need more info. Have a nice day and good luck.

A/c short cycles

I had same problem, I took it to a shop, they said it was overcharged by twice the amount that it needed, so they sucked out all of it, and put the proper fresh amount back in. They said if i would have left it, that the compressor would have exploded, and ruined everything internally to the A/C system,

They also were troubleshooting my wiring for the short cold cycles, and after the first hourly rate of $95, I paid and left. But then I noticed they had it set at 65* but when I turned the electronic temp up to 70* it blew cold. So try turning up the temp a little bit to find what works for you with the A/C running to get it to blow cold.

Electronics, gotta love em

The temperature blend door on the driver's side might be broken or stuck. Also, if this vehicle does not have the correct amount of refrigerant, it will do what you are describing.
