SOURCE: 97 VW Jetta TDI Timing Belt, How difficult is it?

Hi There,

Here's a step-by-step from some great guys over at TDIClub.com
for an AAZ (which I'm assuming you have)
http://www.tdiclub.com/articles/A3-TimingBelt/

It's pretty involved, and some special tools are needed. I've seen kits for sale

SOURCE: 03 jetta tdi timing belt broke

The number of miles is not relevant, because in 7 years of driving, obviously it was mostly highway miles and caused little wear.

It only takes about an hour to try just changing the belt. You need to buy a belt anyway. So it is always worth the attempt.
Most VW's have small depressions in the pistons for the valves, to prevent anything serious.

But no, I do not believe the TDI even is an interference fit.
Only the DOHC GTI engine was even close. I do not believe the TDI had a dual cam version, nor was any Jetta dual cam. And it is only with dual cam that the valves hit, because they are on such a hemisherical angle.

When do you change timing belt on 2001 TDI Jetta. We have every 60,000, but service now just told me it has always been 105,000. Also we have a 2006 TDI Jetta and that timing belt is every 80,000 correct?

My sincere apologies for the delayed response.
I am personally going back to answer your unanswered questions.

I do not know if you still need this information, however I am answering it either way.

The Serpentine Belt: visible on the outside of the Engine, should be replaced every 60,000 miles. The Timing Belt: not visible/inside the Engine, should be inspected/replaced every 100,000 miles.

Let me know if this helped, or if you have additional information or questions. Feel Free to contact me at FixYa.com!

Again my apologies...

2002 Jetta TDI, has 180,000 miles. Engine sputtered and cut off.

standing at the front of the car pull the cover off the left side of the motor and check the belt. No tools are required the check the belt. Cover pulls up and off. It's to the left end of the valve cover.

2003 Jetta tdi serpentine belt

hi doug

there should be a diagram for the belt somewhere under the hood of your car usually adjacent to the emission (VECI) label near the rad the belt or on the actual hood
the tensioner is automatic adjusting. using a ratchet and the proper size socket rotate the tensioner (usually anticlockwise but youll be able to tell as you turn it) to release tension and slip the belt off of the alternator pulley. be careful not to let go of the tensioner while slipping the belt off or you will hurt your fingers!
