Question about 1998 Ford Taurus

Ford Taurus Heater won't switch over to AC

I have a 1998 Ford Taurus. The AC has always worked extremely well. About two years ago, I started having a problem with it not switching over from heat to ac. My husband was able to flip a vent under the dash to manually switch it from heat to ac in the summer and back to heat in the winter. This year it didn't work. He's checked all the fuses and relays and everything appears to be working correctly. But, the ac compressor won't come on and when you move the switch to ac on th e dash, only heat comes out. Is the problem with the actuator? a valve? a switch? Any advise would be immensely appreciated.

Thank you for the information. Can you please provide a couple of other possible culprits if the system doesn't need to be recharged, isn't leaking, and the compressor still won't engage? Is there a fairly straightforward way to test the compressor itself without having to remove the entire unit? Again, any ideas will be immensely appreciated.

Okay, we jumped the compressor and it did come on. The blend door actuator has been manually flipped from heat to AC. But still no AC. Any other possible solutions? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

I guess first thing to find out is why compressor is not coming on, as without that running you won't get any cool air. May just need a recharge, but I would have that checked out first. If system is low on freon, it won't engage, and if it is low, why, as in where is leak & how much to fix it, would be my first concern.

Can try a jumper wire between terminals on pressure switches in the line or at "H" block by firewall, just to see if compressor will kick in, but don't let it run too long if it does come on. Just test to see if compressor engages.

No heat in my 2002 ford taurus. Replaced heater core 3 years ago, replaced termastat and flushed radiator today. Could the switch be bad that I use to go from hot to cold??

It could be the switch, or the actuator that opens the climate control blend doors. The 02 Taurus had problems with this part. A new remodeled part is now available from Ford.
Part# 3F1Z-19D842-AA I hope this helps.

I have a 2000 ford taurus and the radio quit working and the heater come on when you start the car and the heater is off

We have a 1998 Ford Taurus that has the radio in an oval bezel that has the heater controls also on it.

If this is like your vehicle, then when you remove the radio using two coat hangers shaped like a 'C' then you can see where the electrical connections go for the fan and the heater setting.

The radio in our 1998 Ford Taurus started to malfunction with the volume level not being adjustable.

After taking the radio out, and putting it back in, a week later the problem went away, mysteriously, and to my surprise.

Hope this helps.

Can't change air flow direction on ac/heater control. Only blows up to windshield.

It will be a cable that will be disconnected. or broken. Youll have to take some of the dash apart to see the cable and follow it to the switch. Dont be affraid to take some things apart and when you cant see, use a mirror to help you see behind the dash. work the control and watch the action. You will fix this dont get frustrated. good luck
