You should have this scanned at a at good transmission shop . its can be tough situation to solve these issues when concerning trasmission issues. even tougher when you cant afford mechanical issues even worse transmission issues like differentals ,shift solenoids ,pressure solenoids ,etc. i just noticed rereading your situation you dont mention any trouble with 3rd or 4th gear i assume no problems 3or4th gear and take off in 1 st i assume is no issue either. just to let you know w/transmissions there can be simular issues with different solutions, couple of things first check for a air modulator valve, driver side between transmission and radiator it will have vacuum line on it going to your intake make sure all the way connected or need replaced. also right below your modultor is a transmission mount have someone help you for this. have someone put the car in drive hold brake firm and give it gas see if the trans mount is sloppy or broke if it is fast acceleration would cause your shifting problem 4 sure esp going to 2nd gear. tras mount $65 modulator $50 . 1 nut holds air mod. on easy do it your self fix. dont forget o ring if replace the air mod. . cheaper then $1800 to $2200 good luck hope this helps you..

Check all your shift cables & linkages on transmission & at throttle and make sure they have good lubrication, as something as simple as a sticking cable can cause those symptoms too.

I have a 2002 ford windstar. Every once in a while it blows out white smoke from the exhaust. But before this had happened it sounded like the transmission was wining down when taken off. Are these problems all related?

Transmission shifting problem

You need to get a hold of your local Chevy dealer. There was a bullitin on slide shifting on these years. There is a wire that has to be jumped on the computer to solve this problem. Hopefully it hasn't already ruined the transmission

Try a tranny service change a place that changes the filter the pan gasket and fluid not some of these quick places that just drain a couple quarts out of the tranny lines and thats it that wont help but a complete tranny service should help.

1988 TH400 won't shift correctly

You will need a good manual that is focused on the transmission and possibly someone to lean over your shoulder to help you. Clean workspace is imperative. These are rather easy as you are for the most part stacking parts back into the housing when reassembling it. I would say look for a yard trans to put in it meanwhile and then you can learn at your leisure.

Tranny slips & wont shift past 2nd gear

Ok, you will need to first check the fluid level in this transmission. if the trans is sealed, you will need to take to the dealer for a fluid check. assuming that the fluid level is proper, this will usually be caused by a faulty transmission control module and faulty shift solenoids as well. these devices are located on and inside the trans and i recommend testing each device for flaws.

Most slips are the result of gear ware but, the solenoids and TCM will cuse this issue as well.

1990 silverado 5.7l struggles under load only when just off idle

With all you've done so far I'd have to say that I'd be tempted to take it to a good tranny shop just for sake of a diagnosis, which the mechanic can probably do free of charge, and a little drive down the road. Almost sounds like it's trying to take off in second gear or something. Other than that, the only thing that comes to mind at all is possible plugged exhaust, like catalytic converter.

96 plymouth voyager no shift

you say the fluid looks good... that's great.
now next time your out drive for about ten good minuetes long enough for the transmission to get nice and warm and then pull over to nice level ground and with the vehicle in park check the fluid again. it's kind of hard to read because it always has a lot of bubbles on it and stuff. but it may be low on fluid.. good-luck ray

Automatic transmission sounds like it stuck in 3rd gear

You need to check the transmission fluid level, if it is low the tranny will not shift. If, however, the fluid is to the proper level then you will need a new transmission.
Try putting new fluid in and look for a leak in the pan gasket, then all you may need is a transmission service. When the service is done the mechanic will look for pieces of metal in the old fluid, if found this is very bad and you will need a new tranny.
You might consider a new or used car, you can definately find a good deal out there!
