I have a 1997 Grand Am V6 3.1. It takes a longer than usual time to change out of first gear, I have to travel about a block before it would change. I had the trans. filter and oil changed, but the problem is still there. Please help.

My 98 pontiac grand prix sometimes will die going down the road sometimes it will start right back up sometimes it doesnt it takes a little while and also right before it dies sometimes tge rpms will go...

Might be your fuel pressure regulator.. also your car might be vapor locked.Next time it shuts off loosen your gas cap... If you hear it sucking in air... that's your problem...or your catalytic converter is clogging up...check the sensors on the pipes..If there bad it tells your car it needs more gas when it really don' will smell gas

I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand am. will not start, cranks over you can hear the fuel pump and can smell gas, seems to be getting spark, trys to start then dies. I had this problem 1 1/2 years ago had it towed...

Sounds like your ICM has gone bad and will need to be replaced. They start giving starting problems or at times will stop working when it starts to get hot, and when they fail total. You run in to the issues your are having now.

Good luck and keep us posted and you can have your ICM tested first before replacing just to make sure your not replacing good parts.

Thank you for using fixya

Car shuts off after starting it. chugs while driving. sometimes will shut off after starting and placing in gear. What is causing this to happen?

Mine did the same thing, I have a 2001 Grand Prix Gt and it just started doing that and to keep it running when I start it, I have to hold the gas pedal down, and it is not shifting right, I took it in today and they told me it was my transmission and they could either put a new one in it or rebuild it. To rebiuld it is about $1700 and to put a new transmission in it is about $2800.

(1)look at the wires in the steering column where it adjust up and down and see if some wires are touching inside the steering cover.
(2) it a reason to suspect a bad ground to the motor also will cause it too

your mechanic is wrong!!!!cause i have never held of or come across a module doing such things.
