Question about Volvo 740

1 Answer

Hi, With our 1991 volvo 740 we recently noticed the brake pedal seems lower (Closer to the floor) than it used to be. The brakes seem ok, but need to know why or what is happening to the braking system???? Thanks in advance!

Check fluid level in master cylinder, and top it up to proper level first. If fluid very low, you may have a leak in system somewhere, so pay special attention to that after you top it up. If it has drum brakes on rear, they may need to be adjusted.

Try pushing pedal down as you would in a normal quick stop, then hold pressure on it & gradually ease up slightly & see if pedal begins to fade to floor. ( one way of checking if master cylinder is faulty.) If it doesn't appear to fade, master cylinder is probably o.k. If all appears to be working as it should, try bleeding brakes, from right rear, left rear, right front, left front. Extra travel in pedal may just be from pads wearing down & pistons in calipers traveling further to apply brakes. Bleeding should take care of that. Just take a minute and spin each wheel after to make sure no drag from brakes when released so that you know you don't have any calipers seizing up.

Sounds like from what you describe it's a leaking break caliper. The best thing to do is get a rebuilt one. It's best to replace them in pairs. Also replace or clean the brake pads thoroughly!

It sounds like air in the brake line. No,it is probably not ok! They sell a one man break bleeding kit! Bleed the system and replace lost brake fluid.Check all the brake lines for damage,as well.

Practically you can check on the harness and connectors to the instrument cluster for loose connectivity. remove the dashboard carefully and cehcck for dry solder or loose connections, use a lens to check for pcb line break or cracks.

sounds like you need to take it back to the mechanic and tell him this. then tell him to fix it correctly or pay for another shop to fix the problem. it seems that he is not getting it bleed correctly.
