Question about 2007 Hyundai Sonata Limited Sedan

Why would one rear strut have an issue? I went to get new tires at Costco and I was told I should replace the rear tires also as some uneven wear on one of the rear tires. He said it indicates an issue with the rear strut.

The best way I have found to check the struts is to press down at each corner of the vehicle in this case it would be in the rear and let go, the vehicle should come up and go down and come to a complete stop. The car should not bounce up and down 2,3 or 4 times . Also to see if Costco is correct, compare both sides and see if they do the same thing. If both react the same I would question the diagnosis. Good luck and hope this was helpful

It is not uncommon to have one strut fail. But if I were you I would be getting a second opinion. The car is only 2 years old and unless you do huge mileage I wouldn't think the strut would have failed.More than likley wheel alignment or tyre pressure issue.
Hope this helps.

It sound like the Camber is off in the rear. Did you have an alignment done after the new struts wear installed?

You need to have a four wheel alignment done. Keep in mind once the tires start to wear like you have they will continue to wear that way even after the align is done.

Sounds like you should have the alignment checked on an alignment machine on all 4 wheels.Once you get those readings and an expert alignment mechanic's estimate on repair, only then will you know the correct repairs needed.

I'm being told I need to have the rear cambers replaced during my alignment because they are off by some measurement and this is causing my rear tires to cup.

Cupping is usually caused by faulty shock or struts. Camber that is out of specification will cause uneven wear from inside to outside of tire. The shop should supply you with a printout of where your measurements are currently and what they should be. Can you send a good picture of the tires tread?

Have had a cupping issue on the inside rear tires since I bought my 2004 Solara SLE new. Dealer says I have not rotated the tires frequently. That just delays the real issue. I am told struts and...

The dealer is right.Struts and bushings can have an effect on tires.Struts keep the tires in contact with the road, when the struts wear out,the tires start to bounce, but you may not notice it.I would start by having the struts checked and replace if need be.

It's likely the tires. The Bridgestone Turanza OEM tires were specially designed to reduce road noise, which can be an issue. If you're running a different brand of tire, then that may be the cause. Also, if one of the rear tires has an issue (e.g. uneven wear), that may also be the cause. Possible causes of uneven wear include worn rear struts, infrequent rotation, bent wheel, or wheel/tire out of balance. Wheels/tires need to be rebalanced occasionally - at least every 20k miles.

Definately an alignment issue. May even be something damaged. Need to find out as you may have a pre-existing condition that you can take back to where you purchsed this vehicle.
