Replaced the starter in my 92 saab 900s clutch problem

Hi, recently replaced the starter in my 92 saab 9002 convertable and drove it for about 15 min to check it out. Engine started to smell a mix of hot and electrical. Parked it back at home went to start it later to check it out would not start now the shifter only goes between 2nd and 4th gear it is as if it is jammed will not enter reverse either. Could this be a problem with the gear box, the clutch itself or what. Was having no problems shifting before the starter replacement. Could the non starting issue be due to the clutch not engaging enough to start the vehicle or am I way off base ???? This is an awsome car and I am pretty sad about the situation please help if you can :(

I would be checking the starter motor isnt engaged all the time.Remove the starter and check for damage or signs of heat / Burning.
Once you have the starter out check the gears and see if they have freed up any.Let me know how you get on.

gonna have to go back and study her. sounds like a short circuit involving the shifter linkage which is like an aircraft cable or more simply, ten speed brake cable. I say aircraft cable because saabs are more or less a fuselage without the wings, a good car. hang on to her. sounds like the problem started before you even touched her. study saab stuff on the net, recalls , and the like, sounds like some mechanical stuff got in the way of some electrical stuff, probably just from getting old, study it and see how the tranny shifts with a friend, or did , use a strong flashlight or droplight, youll figure it out if you have patience

My 92 saab 9000 wont start. it makes a spinning sound sort of like a hairdryer. the battery is fine and i get the oil changed every 3000 miles and all the other fluids regularly checked. so what could it...

Either the timing belt/chain/gears has failed, which can really change the sound of cranking, but the engine visibly goes around.

If the engine does not turn (as it sounds is the case with your car), but the starter spins fast enough to be described as sounding like a hairdryer, then the starter drive is bad and the starter will need to be replaced or rebuilt.

The starter drive is turned by the starter motor, and the drive in turn turns the gear that engages the flywheel of the engine. The part that turns that gear will not let the starter motor be pushed by the engine — it has a one-way, overrunning clutch in it. If the engine got a chance to spin the starter, the starer would simply explode. It is maybe 10 or 15 to one between the engine. One good start using the gas pedal would spin the starter like 15 to 25 thousand RPM...

If that overrunning clutch fails the starter motor cannot spin the gear that turns the engine.

The switch needs to be replaced and it requires some special tools if it's in the steering column. If it's on the floor any shade tree mechanic can do it.
