Only ever top up the rad and not the bottle on the side ,start by renewing the rad cap because its supposed to draw in coolant when cold but if seal in the rad cap is perished it will not draw the coolant back in the rad

My heater doesn't work

I got similar problem on a 1998 XJ8 a few weeks ago. It turn out to be a dead auxiliary coolant pump. This is an electric pump that help pumping the hot coolant into the heater core when the engine is at low revs. The main engine coolant pump is not sufficient to provide enough coolant throughput to the heating system on some cars, so a auxiliary electric pump is required. If this is your problem, you might still get a little hot air when driving at high speed. If this is your problem and are a do-it-yourself, you can even save the price of a new pump by just replacing the auxiliary pump carbon brushes. They are most likely completely worned after 13 years of service. My brushes have a 4x4mm section, yours might be different. If you do not find exact size, carbon brushes can be cut and/or sanded to size.

Can drive truck and suddenly ac will shut off and the temp gauge will display the message engine hot ac off, even though the actual gauge reads its cool, this happens even after sitting all day

Hello, when the last time you have had your truck coolant system serviced? The anit-freeze needs to be reomove the coolant system flushed out (cleaned) Also, maybe a sticky themrastat and it will need to be replace along with a new radaitor cap.

. Clean the radiator inside and out---flush the inside with flush cleaner especially designed for auto coolant systems.
Flush the engine block this can be done with the radiator at the same time.
Replace the thermastat
replace the radiator cap with the correct pressure cap. GB...stewbison

The top hose is hot but the bottom hose isn't what could make that happen

Provided you have sufficient coolant aboard, it sounds as though you have a restricted radiator. If it's that bad, don't even bother flushing . Buy a new one. They are not that expensive, and much cheaper than a new engine!

I have a 2001 v70xc. Just today the heat in the car will only blow warm air if the thermostat knobs are turned all the way to 80. Anything less and the air blows cool. Any thoughts on what the issue may...

1.)Check that your antifreeze reservoir is between the min and max marks (You want to be VERY VERY sure that your engine has sufficient coolant or you could damage you engine). If your engine/coolant system was low, very little hot coolant would get into the heater core and you could have low heat in the cabin.

2.) If you have your engine warmed up (as seen on the engine temperature gauge), try squeezing the top radiator hose gently (wear a glove as this could be hot). It should be very rigid/firm (a little harder than a tennis ball). After these two steps you should be relatively sure you have sufficient coolant. Watch out for sweet smells though, this would mean you have a leak somewhere.

3.)If you have you noticed your engine takes longer than usual to warm up you could have a thermostat stuck OPEN, which may need to be replaced.

These would be the first 3 basic trouble-shooting steps for low heat in the cabin, before continuing further the investigation. You may find more specific information for your model, but these three steps are universal for just about all vehicles.

Good Luck!
