Question about 2000 Hyundai Accent

1 Answer

I have a Hyundai Accent (1999 with 70k miles. I replaced timing belt and water pump at 65 k miles and in general car was running fine except that the check engine light was on. I was driving on highway today with my A/C (which I rarely use) on for a hot summer day and the car suddenly stopped on the highway. It won't start and had to be towed. Any ideas as to what could be wrong and how to check it. Thanx

Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there.

Is it advisable to replace the water pump when replacing the timing belt? The timing belt does not drive the water pump.

This would be an at your own discretion kind of event. Generally, if you need to remove the water pump to service something it is good to replace the water pump tho. Water pumps are prone to leak when you put them back on to many vehicles. This of course doesn't mean it will leak. There are many factors that would contribute to this all the way from the pump being slightly warped to the manner in which it was sealed back on there. I would take into account how many miles are on the pump and how much one costs as well.

Short answer with no details on mileage etc. Just based on assumed miles and age... I would replace this if it wasn't going to hurt me financially. If I was in a pinch and it didn't have to happen I would leave it alone as long as it was running fine.

Does the 2007 hyundai accent GS hatchback have a "zero clearance" engine? if the timing belt breaks, will is cause severe damage to the engine?

No it will wipe out the valves.. usually all of the exhaust valves. Here is the interval for changing the timing belt on your Hyundai..
"Normal service replace every 60,000 miles or 48 months. Severe service replace every 40,000 miles or 48 months."

Driving and was passing at 65 miles an hour. Honda civic 2001 started to shake and the check engine light came on. Pulled over and stopped the car. Turned it back on and it drove fine except the check...

Timing belt might have slipped a tooth causing the engine to misfire. Check that the crankshaft and camshaft is in the correct position and the tensioner is working properly. Ideally, if the timing belt is replaced, the tensioner and the water pump also has to be replaced. Or you might be able to just replace the spring for the tensioner. A less than $5 part.

Where is the water pump on a 2000 hyundai 2.5 motor

Your water pump is located underneath the timing cover, your timing belt runs the water pump, when replacing water pump replace timing belt also, belt should be replaced every 50,000 miles

TIMING CHAIN CHANGE

hyundai recommends replacing the belt every 60,000 miles or 48 mos and this is an "interference" engine which means if the belt breaks, it will cause internal engine damage. happy holidays

If the water tends to keep going down then there has to be a leak somewhere. Try also looking at the hose coming from the overflow tank and see if the hose might be kinked. You might also be blowing antifreeze out the tailpipe. Take a look and if there is bluish white smoke then you have confirmed that theory,

Does a Hyundai 2002 1.6L DOHC have a timing belt or chain? If it's a chain, does it need to be replaced?

If you have an Accent which I believe that you do, it has a belt which needs to be changed every 60-80k miles. This vehicle has what is called an interference engine which basically means that if the belt breaks, the engine will continue to turn BUT the camshaft stops. If any of the valves are open the piston will slam into the open valve (interfere) and you will be looking at a new engine. I would recommend changing the water pump at the same time as well as the tensioner. I would also have the pulleys inspected by a professional mechanic and replaced as needed. If you just change the belt and the tensioner or the pulleys are weak then you can have premature breakage.
