Question about 2008 Dodge Avenger
2008, Avenger...I can use force to move it to Reverse and actually moves backwards, but will not go into Neutral or Drive. Stays in Park!!!
Check the brake pedal safety interlock. It's electrical & mechanical & often you can have a misadjusted cable or bad solenoid that dis engages the lock. There's a bypass on the gear shift, small slot that the ignition key fits into in order to move the gear selector. Do not turn the key, just insert it & move the selector to neutral, start the car & take it to a repair facility of your choice.

Just had mine fixed at the dealer
pull of the fascia plate surrounding the shifter
look down on the left side, you should see a little spring reaching from a pink knob that is part of the interlock, going back about 2 inches to a hook on part of the shifter body
if it is missing and the same problem as mine, then the spring hook broke off and the whole sifter assembly will need to be replaced by the dealer (yeah, I know!), price is ~ $250
