Mos likely you have a clog fuel filter and a fuel pump going bad
the reason is than the fuel pump is working so hard and is getting over heated and a it cuts off then when the fuel pump cool down
start working again.
first replace your fuel filter and tray out.
get a fuel pressure gauge and test for fuel pressure.
( the service port us usually on the fuel injector rail )
you will see a little black cap kind of like on a wheel.

if the problem comes back
see if you getting pressure when the car wont star
if you have a bad fuel pump you will see. the is little or non pressure.
Turn the key on the "run" position.
the pump shut work for 5 seconds when the engine is not running.

If you have a check engine light on, bring it to your local auto part store.
most of them will check it out for free and tell you what malfunction code you have.

DID YOU CHECK THE FUEL PRESSURE, IT SHOULD NOT DROP ONCE THE VHEICLE IS SHUT OFF. ALSO when you turn the key on it should build up to 35 psi right away

Wont start when hot until cool

Also, consider seriously about replacing the water pump. I have a friend with this exact car, and they had the same problem - the water pump was literally "gone" - when it was pulled and shown to me, I was amazed at the condition - this was the factory water pump and if you can picture what fan blades look like, imagine the fan without the complete blades - they were completely corroded and the pump was seized up - make sure you drive as little as possibe, as this friend had driven on it with the pump in that condition for months, which in turn caused a blown head gasket as well as several other mechanical problems.

I ram out of gas now my 1998 ford taurus wont start

It's quite possible you burned out the fuel pump. The fuel pump relies on a constant flow of gasoline to cool it. Unfortunately, you have to drop the tank to access the fuel pump, but is a fairly easy fix for an avid do-it-youselfer. Before you go to that length, though, try having someone stand by rear of the car and listen for the "whirr" of the fuel pump when you turn the key to the "RUN" position. (not "START", just "RUN") If they can hear the pump, try turning the key off and on about 5 times to re-pressurize the fuel system before attempting to start the engine. Hope this helps a little and your problem is not too severe. Best of luck!
