Question about 1995 Jeep Cherokee

I put the coolant in the coolant tank, fill up the radiator with coolant and somewhere the belt is making the coolant leak and its making the radiator drain everything, it als makes a noise like if something is lose from the belt.

The belt has nothing to do with coolant leaks. You should however closely check all hoses for a leak as well as the water pump, which will not only drain the cooling system but also possibly leak/spray onto the belt making a squealing sound.

If you are blowing coolent out around the drive belts you have a bad water pump. Use a repair manual and replace.

Does the empty radiator have anything to do with the AC? OR is it always empty? You should fill the radiator and the tank when the engine is cool. Never take the radiator cap off a HOT engine. It can shoot hot steam and water all over you and cause serious burns. With the engine cool, take the radiator cap off and fill it with the proper coolant, not just water. The coolant instruction label should be on or near the radiator. Fill the radiator completely, You may have to finish it slowly because of air trapped in the system. You can run the engine a short time to assist in filling the radiator. When the engine is running, if a lot of air bubbles out it could have a blown head gasket. DO NOT ALLOW THE ENGINE RUN UNTIL IT GETS HOT. If there is air in the system the coolant will go down and you can continue to fill it. When it is completely full, shut off the engine, top off the radiator if necessary and put the cap on completely and tightly. Fill the coolant tank to the full mark with the same coolant as the radiator. Drive the car and see if it overheats. If it smokes and has water coming out the exhaust, it probably has a blown head gasket. After it cools, check the radiator again. If it is low or out of coolant, again - blown head gasket. A blown gasket can **** coolant into the combustion cylinder OR can blow exhaust back into the cooling system. It can also allow motor oil into the radiator. Look for oil when you are filling the radiator. Also check the engine oil, if it has coolant in it, it will be a thick gooey mixture. In either case you should have the car towed to a qualified mechanic for testing and repair. If none of these things are occurring, look for a leak in the coolant system. A bad hose, or a leaking water pump. A defective radiator cap or the cap is not on tight. Look for the easy things first. Good luck.

The radiator was emptied out and i want to add antifreeze and water? there are 2 areas that say antifreeze goes here?


  • One is the radiator and the other is an overflow tank. Sometimes anti freeze will back pressure a bit and need somewhere to go and other times the antifreeze gets low in the radiator. That is the purpose of the radiator.
  • Put the antifreeze in the radiator fist and then add to the reservoir. Pay attention to the cold/hot level fill on the overfill tank.
  • You need to find out where all that antifreeze went to if the radiator was empth. Pull the dipstick and look for a chocolate milk look on the oil. This would be a head gasket or a cracked head.
  • Otherwise keep an eye out for a leak and repair it soon.

IF THERE IS NO RADIATOR CAP ON TOP OF THE RADIATOR, YOU SHOULD SEE A SMALL HOSE TO THE TOP OF THE RADIATOR FOLLOW THAT TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER, THERE WILL BE A WHITE OR YELLOWISH CONTAINER ON THE WHEEL WELL, WITH A CAP ON TOP! IT USUALLY HAS COOLANT PRINTED ON IT! THAT IS WHERE YOU CAN PUT THE COOLANT!

How to i add coolant to a 1998 buick century


Open radiator cap and slowly put coolant in top(with car off and cold), fill till the fluid comes to top and let set for a minuite and continue to to fill till full, then start car with cap off and run till guage comes up half way and then guage will come down quarter way and have hot air running on high and feel the temp of air till its hot and then check level in radiator , then put cap back on and fill the resivore to the line it shows.if it was real low then you have a leak somewhere or internal leaks , whitch needs further diagnosis.

No, you can't add too much coolant. Rather, it does not hurt anything if you do. Did you add it to the radiator, or to the overflow tank?

Let it cool, then remove the radiator cap, and if needed, add coolant to the radiator. Put the cap back on, and fill the overflow tank to the "full - cold" line. Start it and run it a few minutes and look for leaks. If you find no leaks, drive it for a day or two, then let it cool and check it again. If it is down a lot (without overheating), you have a leak somewhere. If you lose enough coolant, that will make it overheat. However, if it overheats, that can cause loss of coolant, when you stop the car, you will see steam and smell coolant, and often hear it boiling.

If it overheats again, make note of when it happens: driving on the highway, or stop-and-go around town. Overheating on the highway usually indicates a clogged radiator, while in-town overheating usually indicates a bad cooling fan (you don't need the fan above about 30 MPH). A bad fan is usually the fan relay, but it can be the fan thermostat (different from the engine thermostat), or a bad fan motor.

Cooling system problem


well it might overheat because air got into system, replace the thermostant and then fill system, run van keepin an eye on the temp, it will start to run hot because coolant has not filled the motor just the radiator, when it starts running hot shut it down, wait 3 minutes and start, now this is done with cap off,after restart coolant should get sucked in get filling radiator as needed,may get messy but got to bleed cooling system. hope thius helps.

Is there a cap on the radiator to fill with antifreeze? I would like to add some leak repair and want to put it directly into the radiator, not the expansion tank.


No, there is no direct access to the radiator. You can only put fluid in the reservoir. And I agree with Ziggyone, the coolant repair will clog the heater core and probably the radiator.

You could just be burning it up. Do you have accesive white smoky exhaust?
Have you filled radiator completely. Fill completely once while vehicle is running, burp upper radiator hose while adding. Then wait 10 minutes and the coolant level should drop in radiator as it will flow into engine block. This is where you want to fill the system again, and put the cap on.

The coolant that you are adding fills up to the top of radiator, then slowly drains down through engine block and water pump, You will have to fill radiator completely about 2 times for it to stay full for good.

My wife notice a little steam coming from under the hood of her 1998 volvo s70 from the coolant tank it has a new radiator and thermostat what could this be


the coolant tank level rises and lowers according to the temperature of the water when you put a new radiator in you usually fill it right up so the boil off has to go somewhere it should sort itself out in a few days in the meantime just make sure the radiator is full (check it when cold ) and that the coolant tank is within the marking on the tank hope this helps regards Jim
