Question about 2001 Chrysler Concorde

Cooling fan not running, fuse and relay seem to be ok. engine naturally heate up quickly. the temperatures are almost 100 degrees.

Turn on ac if the fan comes on the you have a bad fan to be sure use a test lightto check for power at the plug.

Car overheated replaced thermostat/checked 30amp fuse to 78relay with wire fan came on. Is this meaning relay is bad due to fan came on?


That would depend upon where you placed the voltage on the relay. And even then not necessarily so. The only thing you verified with the test was that the fan itself is okay. The cooling fan relay is powered from the ECM (computer). The ECM will power the cooling fan whenever one of two conditions exists:

1. Engine temperature exceeds about 210 degrees F. his temp is determined by the coolant temperature sensor.
2. The A/C is turned on. The fans must run at all times when A/C is on.

So, with the engine running, turn on the A/C. If the cooling fan activates, then you know the ECM, relay, and fan is OK. If the fan then doesn't activate when the engine temp gets high, it is the coolant temperature sensor that is the culprit.

If the fan doesn't run when you turn on the A/C, then, since you know the fan works, try the relay next, because other than wiring, the only other item that could be wrong is the ECM (and you don't want to go there!)

A fan failure, or a failure of the fan relay or control circuit is bad news because it can allow the engine to overheat.
Five things may prevent an electric cooling fan from coming on:
  • Defective temperature switch or coolant sensor
  • Engine thermostat is stuck OPEN (engine never gets hot enough to turn on the fan)
  • Failed fan relay
  • A wiring problem (blown fuse, loose or corroded connector, shorts, opens, etc.)
  • Bad fan motor
ELECTRIC COOLING FAN QUICK CHECKS.
One way to quick check the fan circuit is to start the engine and turn on the A/C to max. If the fan runs, the fan motor, relay, fuse and wiring are all okay. But this test doesn't show if the temperature switch or temperature sensor and PCM are energizing the fan when coolant temperatures are high.
To check the temperature at which the fan comes on, turn the A/C off and keep the engine running until it reaches normal operating temperature. Most fans should come on when the coolant reaches about 200 to 230 degrees. If the fan does not come on, something in the control circuit is defective. Resistance checks should then be made on the temperature sensor or switch, and a voltage check on both sides of the relay (you will probably need a wiring diagram of the fan cooling circuit on your vehicle to identify the relay terminals and wiring connections).
The fan motor itself can be checked by using jumper wires. Unplug the wiring connector on the fan, and use the jumper wires from the battery to route power directly to the fan. If the fan motor is good, the fan should spin at normal speed when supplied with 12 volts. Noisy bearings or a slower than normal speed would indicate a worn motor.

At the main fuse and relay box, check the 30A EGI INJ fuse. If OK, the main relay closes to apply power to the cooling fan relay. Next, check the 30A FAN 1 and FAN 2 fuses.If OK, power is being applied to the fan control module. The PCM processes engine coolant temperature sensor input and sends a signal to the fan control module which, in turn, causes the cooling fan motor to operate. Hi. Your radiator fan motor may be seized. Should ingage between 95-100 degrees when you parked on idle after achieving full working temp. If it doesn't, check fuse first and than relay responsible for cooling fan( you can find cavity in your owner manual. Let me know. The reason you car is ok while driving is the air going thru your radiator. When you stoped or parked for longer time with no speed there is nothing to cool your radiator. Fix it asap or eventually will cause engine over hit and seize.

2000 daewoo leganza is overheating, leaking anti freeze, and water. what is wrong?


sound like thermostat sticking close.replace thermostat and radiator pressure cap.if already done.you could have faulty water pump.if engine overheating at long slow traffic line or setting at a stand still.the engine cooling fans should be running, check and see if cooling fans running if not,check cooling fans fuses and relays.if all is good,hot wire make sure coolings fans okay.if all is good,code scan vechicle for faulty engine coolant temperature sensor and ecm problems.you need a code scanner where you can check live data check see if coolant temperature sensor reading correctly if engine coolant temperature is 190 degrees the coolant sensor. the scanner suppose to show 190 degrees in temperature if not it reads 80 or 90 degrees the engine coolant temperature sensor is faulty need replacing.if all is good check engine oil if look like milk shake blow head gasket will cause over heating.to be on the safe side i would replace thermostat and radiator pressure cap first.to make sure engine coolant circulating through radiator and engine block.

COOLING FANS DONT TURN COULD BE FAULTY FAN RELAY.FAULTY PCM AND FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR.CODE SCAN FOR FAULTY PCM CODE AND A FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR.SEE IF ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS GIVING CORRECT COOLANT TEMPERATURE USING A CODE SCANNER.IF ENGINE IS 190 DEGREES AND THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR READING 100 TO 80 DEGREES COOLANT SENSOR IS BAD.HOT WIRE COOLING FAN TO SEE IF FAN MOTOR WORKS.BECAUSE COOLING FAN MOTOR COULD HAVE OPEN CIRCUIT CAUSING ELECTRIC MOTOR NOT TO TURN ON.

Cannot get cooling fans to turn on for radiator???


The cooling fans won't run until either the engine coolant temperature reaches about 218 degrees or the air conditioner/defroster are on. Once the engine reaches appx 218 degrees the fan will come on and run until the coolant temperature drops a few degrees and will then turn back off. If either the a/c or defrost are turned on then the cooling fan will begin to run to remove the heat from the a/c system and should stay on until either is turned off. If the engine is overheating in slow or stop and go traffic then the fan may not be working at all due to a bad fan motor or blown fuse.

Engine cooling fans are not working


You can check if the fans are working by turning on you Air conditioning. They should run constantly with the A/C on.
Also bear in mind that the fans do not normally come on until the coolant temperature hits around 225-228 degrees.

Sorry - which ones? A/C heating or engine cooling fans?

Check fuses to make sure they're still ok. Remove the ones for the fans - and replace to clear any corrosion off them.

If it's the cooling fans at the front, these are controlled by a temperature switch which may be faulty.
Locate it , and measure the conductivity between contacts when cold - and when engine is very hot. The switch should close at around 90 degrees - 3/4 of the temperature gauge.

If the switch is ok, the relays controlling the fans are probably corroded.
Sometimes mounted on the fan housing - follow the fan motor wiring directly to them.
