Why car wont pick up speed when i get to 40mph then jerks and pick up speed

Does it down shift appropriately when accelerating? Normally when you stomp on the gas while in a high gear (travelling at 40mph), the transmission will downshift to a lower gear giving the car much more torque. This can cause the car to jolt or jerk forward and accelerate suddenly.

If this is way off base and you\'re experiencing something else, please let me know

ever do the 60k mile service interval tune up? ??? ever or this decade?

bingo.

if this is engine jerk and not tranny./clutch jerk, only a mech can know.

then that is calleed MISFIRE>

there are 50 causes of misfire.

but here are the macro reasons.\' (no tuneup is 1st)

1: bad compression in 1 or more cyl.

2: bad spark (tune up fixes that)

3: bad fueling.

4: 47 more.

there is a simple test for each after the tune up dont fix it.

most of the time if the alternator isnt the cause of the battery not recharging after initial start up then it is most likely a wireing problem you may have a short some were causing the alternator to disperse the charging volt else were... check for damaged, loose, or disconnected wires under the hood.. good luck i hope this helps

My son has 1987 Toyota Celica ST with a 3S-FE engine. It sometimes has acceleration issues. For lack of a better word, it jerks while accelerating. But it only does this at times. Other times it works...

Same problem happened to my 1993 Nissan 240SX SE Hatchback. Turned out to be the flywheel for some odd reason. Try that! Also in my opinion it could be bad spark plugs or a clogged fuel filter. Usually those would be the main reasons.

My 1987 Toyota Cressida jerks when stopped at lights and accelerates slowly.

sounds like your ignition timing is REALLY REALLY late, should be 10 degrees BTDC. also check the air filter as this could cause poor acceleration. those 5M-GE/7M-GE engines also want premium gas (91 pump octane or better) they run horribly on lower grade gasolines.

Burnt valve? Start the car, take a store receipt with you to the back of the car and hold the receipt near the tailpipe. Normally, the exhaust will blow the receipt away constantly, but if a valve is cracked, you will notice that on occasion you will see the paper being sucked into the tailpipe.
