Air conditioner in 2000 Dodge Caravan Needs to be Replaced

What is the approximate cost to replace/repair the air conditioner of a 2000 Dodge Caravan. There is no freon left in the system.

I have not had it recharged.

When I was at repair shop they indicated that there was none left in the system, and weeks before that I could see a 'mist' coming into the car each time the air conditioner was turned on.

I'm looking to keep the car for a while even though there are more than 145K miles on it; so, I was just wondering what the 'worst case' cost would be.

Cost of repair will depend on which component of the AC system needs repair/replacement. There are several components to the system, with each component costing different amounts and each requiring different amounts of labor to repair or replace.
But, how do you know there is no refrigerant left in the system? Have you had the system charged recently and it leaked out?

If you are somewhat handy around autos, you can re-charge the AC system yourself, and then you can go from there. It may be that all the system needs is a charge. If you go to your local auto parts store, they will have a Re-Charge kit. Just follow directions. They also have a leak test canister that you put into the system that will detect a leak by blowing a dye out where the leak is, You may be spending around forty dollars or so. You may luck out or the money may go down the drain. At least you could get an idea of the problem, because AC can run you into Hundreds of dollars.

Air Conditioner switch (turn air off/on) only works on the highest setting. What needs to be replaced?

Definetely the switch must be replaced as it is the settting for the thermostat. Before you replace check if there is any loose connecction, wires come out fromt he other termals of the switch. If not the contacts of the other settings may be worn out. Hope you check this out.

97 dodge caravan - has no instrument lights or the instruments don't work. Air & Heat work and lights, etc. Someone said it was one of 3 censors, but which one?

The dash cluster needs to be replaced. I fixed mine by re-soldering all the connections using a pencile soldering iron and a magnifying glass. It takes patients but it may solve the problem. The Cluster is fairely easy to remove. If you buy a used or new one it will have to be reprogrammed by a chrysler dealer at a cost. But the one in the van can be repaired and used again without the programming.

Air conditioner not working in 2007 dodge geand caravan sxt

Hi, the problem your having could be something simple like needs the air con gas topping up this needs to be done at a garage.
If the gas level is ok then the aircon belt needs checking making sure it has not come off.
If both of these are ok then the problem could lie with the aircon pump itself this can be replaced but at a cost.
So get the gas checked and the belt the drive the air con pully.
Hope this is some help to you let me know if you need further assistance

I've been having problems with the a/c and it making funny noises and then the serpentine belt broke. My husband thinks that the repair is more than just the belt being put back on and that it involves...

If your husband is correct, the AC pulley is part of the AC clutch, which, typically on many vehicles, is replaced with the AC compressor as one unit. If a person is handy and familiar with cars, the compressor can be replaced at home. The cost of the part would be approximately $200 - 300 depending on the compressor ( re-manufactured, new). The AC system would have to be evacuated and re-charged, as well.
I suggest that the problem should be pinpointed so that the correct part is identified. For instance, there are other pulleys on the engine, one of which my be the cause of the problem.

sounds like you have a refrigerant leak. you should charge the system up and check for leaks. all fittings, the condensor, the evaporator, and all the lines

The air conditioner has a hissing sound.

Most likely the system is low, but not low enough to shut off yet. Have it checked for leaks by a competent technician - probably needs an evaporator.

heating and cooling fans are generally one and the same. changing freon doesn't always fix the problem... did you have the system pressure checked for leaks first.

Second determine if the vents are opening properly (switching from heat to cooling) basically when you change to cool it closes air access to the heater core.
