Question about 1999 Ford Taurus

Transmission Range Sensor

Are there any other names for this sensor. I can't find it at Kragen/O'Rielly or Autozone.

Could a malfunction in this sensor cause cooling fans not to operate unless the parked gear is engaged? Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT or CTS) is new as well as the pigtail that connects to it.

Is this the Power Distribution Box? If so, I've checked the Low Speed Relay, and it's okay. I can't find a High Speed Relay, but I can't find any literature that speaks of a High Speed Relay. Conundrum. If you're talking about the Constant Control Relay Module, my model year has done away with this devise. It's just strange that the fans wouldn't have turned on until the car was placed in park when it was obviously hot at a stop light. Within just a few seconds of being placed in park on three seperate occasions, the fans would engage, but on two occassions while driving, they did not (the first occassion I could believe the coolant was not hot enough to trigger the sensor until it was placed in park). Any ideas?

Ours certainly seems to be running hot. If we disconnect the CTS so that the fans run continously, we have no problems with coolant overflow out of the expansion tank, especially not any steam, but if they operate with the CTS connected, they don't engage until in park. The thermostat is okay, as is the radiator and water pump is new. Heater core has been bypassed. CTS and pigtail are new. I haven't checked with the A/C on, but the A/C doesn't work. Does that matter? Will it still make the fans engage?

I would not believe that has anything to do with the fans. It may be a relay and on most fords they are found in in a box near the top of the radiator support. The relays are in this box and contain other relays in it that you can't replace. You must buy the whole unit. Part number will be on the outside.

Coolant fans an most cars wil not come on until 225 degrees. Is yours running hot? Do the fans run with the AC on?

The fans will not come on if the compressor is not on. It must have pressure in the system to turn the hi pressure switch on. I suggest you go to a dealer and talk to a ford mechanic who is most expereniced in this vehicle. Talk to someone in the parts department also because they know what part that sells the most that may fix it.

No you won't need to replace the transmission the Digital Transmission Range Sensor isn't inside of the transmission and can be replaced fairly easily.

Here is a link to the instruction for the replacement

If the fluid is full, it's most likely time to replace the transmission. How many miles are on the car? If you keep driving it like that, you will find yourself on the side of the road soon.

did u replace the speed sensor, did u connect the speed sensor? do u have any fault codes in the computers memory? have a Kragen or autozone run the code test to see if u have a speed sensor code or an OD solenoid code, the test is free.

1996 jeep cherokee 4.0 shuts off while driveing. think it is afuel problem?

on this engine the most common problem is the crankshaft poistion sensor (CKP sensor), it will set a fault code in the computers memory, so have a local autozone or kragen test the system for the crank sensor code.
