Question about 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

How can i replace the gasket between the engine and the header? I am specifically worried about over tightening the bolts on the head I have a torque wrench but I dont know how many lbs of force to use?

No torque wrench needed,although you can. Make sure the exhaust manifold isn't cracked,they're a known problem.Just tighten them with a 3/8" ratchet until snug,then go about a quarter turn more,done! When tightening,stagger the bolts,in other words, don't just go across, tighten each corner to snug first,then the center bolts,then do the final quarter turn.

What is the head bolt torque spec


Engines are designed with removable cylinder heads, so valve train and cylinder malfunctions can be separated, giving the owner a chance at making repairs instead of replacing the entire engine. When people get themselves involved in pulling a cylinder head off of an engine you know the automobile they're working on is experiencing serious problems.

Unfortunately one of the most sensitive operations is the reassembly process. In particular the head bolt tightening pattern and torque specifications. These must be adhered to or repeat repairs will likely be needed. This article reviews common head bolt tightening patterns, procedures and tips to increase the chances of success.
Cylinder Head Operation A cylinder head sits on top of the engine block forming a combustion chamber where the air fuel mixture is compressed and then burned. This component also contains intake and exhaust ports allowing the cylinder to take in fresh air and fuel then expel the burnt exhaust gases. The most extreme heat and pressure in an engine exists in this area and is sealed by a head gasket.

Compression of the gasket is distributed evenly by the strategic placement of the head bolts. How tight each bolt should be is known as a torque specification and measured with a torque wrench to assure accuracy. The order in which the bolts are tightened to that specification is known as a tightening pattern. Performing these two procedures correctly is vital to the longevity of the repairs.
Head Bolt Torque Principles Before we get into head bolt tightening patterns and procedures let's talk about the uniqueness of the bolt itself. These heavy-duty fasteners use elasticity principles in their design. The bolt is designed to be stretched to a certain point. It's this spring like property that provides the clamping force and holding power when the fastener is threaded into tapped holes on the cylinder block side. The more the bolt is stretched the tighter it becomes.

An important note about specialized head bolts is some are designed to only be stretched one time. When this is the case a service manual will indicate new bolts are required for reassembly. These instructions are also supplied to the factory auto parts department that sells the gaskets. The second thing to be mindful of is that a bolt can be stretched too far when it's taken past its tightening specification. These fasteners can take on a bottle neck shape where the threaded portion looks thicker than the rest of the bolt. These damaged retainers must be replaced.

Bolt torque sequence on 1991 jaguar xj6 4.0 intake manifold?


intake manifold or head gasket? i know head gasket need a sequential order followed by how many degrees and Lbs of pressure. if its on the intake i doubt it needs an specific torque. just try not to crack the intake manifold since its made of plastic.

Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Apply clean engine oil to the bolt threads and seats, then install the bolts with washers (beveled edges up) in the correct position. Note that bolts 4, 5, 12 and 13 measure 5.00 in. (127mm), and are longer than the others. The other bolts are 4.17 in. (106mm) long.

Tighten the bolts in the proper sequence, in the following stages:
Tighten all bolts, in order, to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
Tighten all bolts, in order, to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
Loosen all bolts completely.
Tighten all bolts, in order, to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
Tighten all bolts, in order, to 40-47 ft. lbs. (54-64 Nm). Or, if you have an angle torque wrench available, tighten them an additional 60-65 degrees.

Install the cylinder head bolts. Starting at top center, tighten all cylinder head bolts in sequence as shown in illustration, using the Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench (09221 - 32001) or equivalent. Repeat the procedure, re-tightening all cylinder head bolt to the specified torque. (torque spec is Cold Engine 105-115 Nm (76-83 ft lb) )
. Install the timing belt tensioner pulley.
. Install the timing belt on the camshaft sprocket, making sure that the tension side is tightened by turning the camshaft sprocket in reverse, all timing marks are in alignment.
. Adjust the timing according to "Timing Belt"
. Install the rocker cover and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Tightening torque: Rocker cover belt:

2.5-3.5 Nm (25-35 kg.cm, 2-3 ft. lbs.)

. Install the timing belt cover.
Install the new intake manifold gasket and the intake manifold. Tighten the nuts and bolts to the specified torque.
Install the new exhaust manifold gasket and the exhaust manifold. Tighten the exhaust manifold attaching nuts to the specified torque.
. Install the surge tank and tighten the nuts bolts to the specified torque.
. Install the power steering oil pump and bracket.
. Install the ignition coil.
. Install the air intake hose.
Connect the vacuum hose, fuel hose and water hose.
. Install breather hose.

  1. Install the new cylinder head gasket with the arrow pointing to the front of the engine.
  2. Install the cylinder head.
  3. Install NEW cylinder head bolts. Torque the bolts in sequence, as follows:
    1. Step 1: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2. Step 2: Plus 120 degree turn.

How do I remove the head? (Blown Head gasket)

  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then drain cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Detach the heater inlet and throttle body heater hoses from water outlet. If accessible at this time, disconnect the upper radiator hose from the water outlet.
  4. Remove the exhaust manifold. For details, please refer to the procedure located in this section.
  5. Remove the intake (camshaft housing for SOHC) and exhaust (DOHC only) camshaft housings.
  6. Unfasten the oil fill tube bolt/screw then remove the oil fill cap and level indicator assembly. Pull the oil fill tube upward to unseat from block.
  7. Label and disengage the injector harness electrical connector.
  8. Detach the throttle body-to-air intake duct.
  9. Tag and disconnect the power brake vacuum hose from the throttle body.
  10. Remove the throttle cable bracket.
  11. Remove the throttle body from the intake manifold with the electrical harness and throttle cable attached and position the assembly aside.
  12. Tag and disconnect the MAP sensor vacuum hose from the intake manifold, then remove the intake manifold brace.
  13. Detach the electrical connectors from the MAP sensor, IAT sensor and the EVAP canister purge solenoid.
  14. If not already done, detach the upper (inlet) radiator hose from the water outlet.
  15. Disengage the coolant temperature sensor connector(s).
  16. Unfasten the cylinder head bolts in reverse order of the installation sequence shown in the accompanying figures.
  17. Lift the cylinder head from the engine block. Remove and discard the gasket. Inspect the oil flow check valve for freedom of movement.
  18. Using a suitable solvent, thoroughly clean and dry all bolts, bolt holes and mating surfaces. Inspect the head bolts for any damage and replace, if necessary. If using a scraper to clean the old gasket material from the mating surfaces, use only a plastic or wood one, NOT a metal scraper. Do NOT allow any debris to fall into the engine! To install:
  19. Place a new cylinder head gasket on the cylinder block, then carefully position the cylinder head in place.
  20. Sparingly coat the head bolt threads with clean engine oil, then allow the oil to drain off before installing.
  21. On 1988-89 engines, install and tighten the cylinder head bolts, in sequence, as follows:
    • Step 1 - Tighten all head bolts in sequence to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
    • Step 2 - Using a torque angle meter, tighten the short bolts an additional 80°and the long bolts an additional 90°in sequence Fig. 5: Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence - 1988-89 2.3L engine 86883121.gif
  22. On 1990-91 engines, tighten the cylinder head bolts, in sequence, as follows:
    • Step 1 - Tighten all head bolts in sequence to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)

  23. On 1992 engines, tighten the cylinder head bolts, in sequence, as follows:
    • Step 1 - Tighten, in sequence, head bolts 1-6 to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm), 7-8 to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and 9-10 to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    • Step 2 - Tighten all head bolts, in sequence, an additional 90°using J 36660 or equivalent
    • Step 3 - In sequence, loosen each bolt one turn, then immediately re-tighten to the specified torque

  25. Engage the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector(s).
  26. Connect the upper radiator hose to the water outlet.
  27. Install the intake manifold bracket.
  28. Attach the following electrical connections: MAP sensor, IAT sensor, and the purge solenoid.
  29. Using a new gasket, install the throttle body to the intake manifold.
  30. Install the accelerator control cable bracket.
  31. Connect the throttle body-to-air intake duct.
  32. Install the oil fill tube and level indicator.
  33. Install the camshaft housing(s).
  34. Install the exhaust manifold. For details, please refer to the procedure located in this section.
  35. Connect the heater inlet and throttle body heater hoses to the water outlet.
  36. Fill all fluids to their proper levels.
  37. Connect the battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.

2005 Dodge 1500 code p0404 EGR valve.


The electronic EGR valve and solenoid assembly is attached to the rear of the left cylinder head ,

  1. Remove electrical connector (5) at top of EGR valve solenoid.
  2. Remove tube mounting bolt (1) at intake manifold.
  1. Remove two bolts (4) connecting EGR tube (1) to valve assembly.
  2. Remove gasket located between EGR tube flange and EGR valve assembly.
  3. Remove two EGR valve mounting bolts (5).
  4. Separate valve assembly (3) from engine.
  5. Remove and discard metal gasket located between cylinder head and valve assembly.
INSTALLATION
  1. Clean area at rear of left cylinder head where it joins base of EGR valve.
  2. Clean EGR tube where it joins EGR valve.
  3. Position new gasket between EGR valve and cylinder head.
  4. Position EGR valve to cylinder head. Install and tighten two bolts (5). Refer to Torque Specifications.
  5. Position new gasket between EGR tube flange and EGR valve assembly.
  6. Position EGR tube (1) to side of EGR valve and into intake manifold.
    1. Install EGR tube flange bolt (1) at intake manifold. Tighten bolt. Refer to Torque Specifications.
    2. Connect electrical connector (5) to top of EGR valve solenoid (2).Do a final tightening of two EGR tube bolts (4). Refer to Torque Specifications
