Question about 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

The front tires wore out on the inside due to worn out balljoints, which on '94 and later models required the replacement of the entire control arms. Now several months later, the outsides are wearing out, although I followed the directions in the repair manual.

1994 lower control arm broke at balljoint


What brand of car? Some brands have after market heavy duty replacements that are made from heavy duty tubing instead of the sheet metal pressings typical for factory parts.. We have seen them that failed due to the fact that pivot bushings wore completely through and into the pressed sheet metal that had been holding the bushings, and the wear through the sheet metal was progressing rapidly toward failure. Check all the other front end control arm components for similar progressive wear out. This kind of thing can be dangerous. It usually will give brake steer in inconsistent directions before failure.

How can i tell if the struts need replaced or the control arm?


jack car under controll arm put pry bar under tire and lift see if tire has pplay if it dose controll arm bushings and or balljoint is bad. look at strut if its leaking its no good or rock car up and down a few times if after you stop rocking it it bounces more than two times strut is bad. could also be upper strut plate

Had a similar problem on my son's Chrysler Cirrus-bad wearing of front tires on the inside. Turned out to be worn inner tie rod ends.
Replaced them and got new alignment. Now it runs better, and is not showing tire wear.

The tires are wear out on the inside and dishing on the outside, is this a sign of wore out struts causing the front to be out of line. What is the fix needed replacw struts in front and new tires


Wearing on the inside can be caused by an excessive camber angle or excessive toe out, or both. Either of these can be caused by worn or damaged suspension parts. Camber affects Caster, and Camber and Caster affect Toe. Toe affects the Thrust Angle. (These are the major suspension angles involved in wheel alignment) The "dishing" or "cupping" is caused by what is sometimes called "wheel-hop" this can be caused by worn-out struts or shocks and can also be caused by tires that are seriously out of balance.

The recommended "Fix" would be to inspect the ENTIRE suspension system to check for loose and/or worn and/or damaged parts. Replace any of these parts as necessary. Then replace and balance the tires and head straight over to the alignment shop to have all of your suspension angles set to manufacturer's specifications. (Most tire stores also have an alignment machine)

yep control arm it is. make sur you jack it up by the body/frame so the weight is off the suspension. lift high to put the balljoint back in the knuckle

try getting wheel shims to change the offset of the tire to hub. should not be more then 1/4". your local tire shop should be able to get them. or your local parts store.

Inner and outer ball joints?? If you mean tie rod ends u will need to set the toe in. Mesure the distance across the back of the tires and then across the front. The differance is ur toe in. Best take it to a wheel align shop and have it done properly it will save you a lot on tires.

I do not believe that the balljoint is causing the squeak. Take your car to an independent mechanic that you trust. dealerships are notorius for mis-diagnosing (it begins with the intake person describing the problem wrong).

More than likely, the squeak is coming from a worn rubber bushing or mount. Check the exhast pipe hangers for worn rubber. Also check the anti-sway bar bushings and the motor mounts. You should be able to replace these with ordinary tools (assuming you have safe access to the botom of the car - i.e. jack stands). Also check the control arm bushings (these would require an expert, or a pro to replace).

If the balljoint boot is cracked, you can prolong the ball joint life by keeping it well greased. If grease is oozing out the crack, then the balljoint is protected. Replacing the balljoint boot requires separating the wheel spindle from the control arm and can be very dangerous because of the strut spring. This should be left to the expert, or professional mechanic. Also, if the ball joint is squeaking, it needs to be replaced.

If you still want to tackle this yourself, buy a Chilton or similar book (under $10) specifically for your car. They have good instructions and diagrams.

A little more information would help like what kind of conditions does it happen, speed, road type and condition, etc. However I am guessing there are some front end components worn out as were very typical on these vehicles. Lower ball joints and idler arms typically only last about 60,000 miles. Checking the idler arm is easy, jack up the passenger side front of the vehicle and grab the tire and try moving it back and forth, if it seems sloppy it will need the arm replaced. Ball joints are a little more difficult to check. You need to jack each side of the vehicle up by the lower control arm as close to the wheel as possible so that the weight of the vehicle is still on the suspension. You will need a long pry bar to put under the tire. Try lifting the tire more while watching the balljoint for any movement. When you do that it should try to pick up the whole vehicle and not move seperately at the control arm. My guess is that you need balljoints and an idler arm. Hope this helps.
