SOURCE: cant get drum off to replace rear brakes 1994 chevy berreta
For the most part there is a drum spreader that must be backed off,
if there is,you will see a little rubber plug on the shoe plate, looking at
brake from pumpkin, a little flat pry bar goes into this hole and you
spin the little wheel which in turn takes the shoes away from the drum. If you do not back them off,you risk bending the spring hardware. You really should replace the hardware anyway, you also
need some anti seize where the shoe touches the back plate.
What has happened, is the shoes have worn a grove into the drum
so the shoes are higher then the drum, which is holding them on.
The little wheel that spreads the shoes apart,is how the shoes must be adjusted when the new ones are put in. You should take
both sides apart or take a pic, if you forget how these go back together you will look like Fred Flintstone using you feet to stop.
Keep spinning the drum,if you are spinning the little wheel the wrong way the drum will stop turning because the shoes are being applied to the drum.
Any more questions about this and please post back, everyone is more than happy to help you.
