The battery was hooked up backwards in my 1991 mercury capri non turbo. I replaced the 80amp main fuse under the hood. It doesn't sound like the fuel pump is working. The cut off switch in the trunk...

Find the fuel pump relay and see if it still has a power feed. I hope you didn't hurt the computer with battery on backwards, but that is a possibility.
Pull the fuel pump relay, and check all the terminals it plugs into with a test light or voltmeter. One terminal should have power. It should be hot at all times. If nothing trace the power supply from battery to that relay. A fuse or fusible link may have gone out. If it does have power, check at the fuel tank for power on the pump wire when the engine is cranking. If power there, likely the pump is gone. If no power signal when cranking the engine, it's back to the relay to check the fuel pump circuit. You will have to see a wiring diagram.

I hooked up my battery cables backwards now most of my electrical system is not working. What could it be

1.) a fried CPU (the cars computer)
2.) a lot of blown fuses in the fuse box under the hood
3.) a lot of burnt wiring in the harness.

hopefully just the fuses.. use this video to help you check the fuses. Its a free youtube vid not mine but correct non the less.

Long story short i replaced the battery on my 1991 capri (turbo) and i put the positive on the negative and the neg on the pos.

I am afraid that you smoked some stuff. If you are very lucky, you may be able to get by with replacing a fuse or 2. However there may be damage to several components, including the engine control module.

The first thing to check is for blown fuses in the main fuse panel located next to the battery on the left strut tower. (See picture)

1988 jeep 4.0 battery installed backwards now cranks but wont start

have you checked all ofyour fuses? usually when you hook up a battery backwads you end up blowing a fuse and or fry your alternator on older modeled vehicles as there is no protection for it.
