What causes 2000 Lincoln contineal check transmission light to come on?

Transmission is not shifting at speeds above 30mph. The check transmission light comes on. Sometimes I shut off the car & restart then it shifts ok & the CK Trans light goes out. What is causing this? do I need a new transmission?

First of all check your Trans fluid level, some times the computer will say its at an ok level when its not. Then take it to 3 trans shops for an estimate, these shops are notorious for ripping you off. Good luck

You will have to have the solenoid body replaced in the tranny and have the PCM reprogrammed.

Transmission over drive is causing the transmission to slip. When I take off the overdrive the transmission functions normally but it uses much more gas.

Roger, that doesn't even make a whole lot of sense to me. If the overdrive is causing the transmission to slip, wouldn't it also cause the fuel mileage to go down? Are you sure the transmission is slipping? Or is the transmission simply shifting in and out of overdrive? If it is, is it shifting at the proper speeds? Driving at around 40 - 50 Mph will sometimes make the transmission go in and out of overdrive repeatedly. This can be perfectly normal.

Have you checked your transmission fluid level?

Is your overdrive off light flashing? If the transmission is actually slipping the OD OFF light should be blinking at you to let you know there is a transmission problem. Either that, or the Check Engine light will be coming on. In either of these cases, you need to scan your onboard computer network for possible fault codes.

I have a 2000 lincoln and yesterday my husbund chanced the fuse for the cig liter and this morning I turned on the car the check engin light was on and the aps light was on and it said to check...

Is you cigarette lighter working now. Odds are it is still not and the fuse he changed belonged to the Transmission ecm. The car will still run, just in a modified or "limp" mode.

2005 Lincoln LS hesitation at low acceleration speeds

It could be a couple of issues:
  1. Since you mention 30mph a speed when the transmission wouild normally shift into 3rd, and again at high speed (you didnt' mention MPH) where it would possibly shift again, it's possible that the transmission is slipping. Check the fluid or better yet, if it's got around 50-60K on it, have the fluid and filter changed.
  2. Another cause could very well be fuel related, be it a filter, fuel sending unit, or the pump itself
I'd start with the transmission fluid. Check it and if the color is starting to brown, or gives a slight burning smell, have it changed along with the filter. If it's just low, then that definitely would cause the transmission to slip.
Best of luck and post back with any other concerns.

Transmission

Check the level of the transmission fluid, low fluid can prevent the transmission from shifting.
