There are no fusible links for the alternator. It is run by a mega fuse in the fuse panel underneath of the hood.

Where is the alternator fuse located on a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer


This charging system is computer controlled , the main heavy gage wire on the back of the alternator should have B+ voltage . The other end is at the battery positive terminal an has a fusible link , that's the only fuse ! Use a volt meter an test for B+ voltage before trying to replace the fusible link . The other two wires (in the connector ) go to the PCM engine computer !

It's a fusible link , do you know what it is ? Here is a youtube video showing location of fusible link . On the video he talks at the vehicle starting , alternator gets power the same way. How to Replace Fusible Link Car won Start If you pull on it an the insulation stretches it's brunt inside .

Did you check for B+ voltage at the heavier gage wire on the back of the alternator ? The turn on signal comes from the PCM - engine computer .

alternator has no fuse --follow the positive terminal wire will come to a connection /junction terminal [[ this is your fusible link also known as master fuse ]] their will be another smaller wire also at connection follow that wire should end at alternator. check the fusible link that it did not blow

alternator has no fuse ----their is a fusible link between battery and alternator -follow the red cable from positive side or follow single wire from alternator towards where they meet will be the fusible link usually 12guage wire for link

1993 ford thunderbird 3.8l the alternator smoked so I changed It made tests and the alternator is not charging I checked the alternator and there is voltage comming out what can be my problem


When the alternator went out, it may have also smoked your fusible link that the output wire is on. There are 2 or 3 fusible links on the starter relay on the passenger side fender. This is where they catch battery power from the positive cable there, or in the case of the alternator fusible link, this is where the output wire connects to battery for recharging it. The gray colored link I believe is the one on the output wire from the alternator. When a fuse link blows, the insulation on the wire may bubble or get rough spots. You cut the old one out and splice in a new fuse link. Make a soldered joint for best practice. Or just replace the whole wire and fuse link, from alternator to starter relay, from a donor car, a salvage hunt.

What guage wire for the black fusible link?


There should be 2 white wires coming from the alternator. There is a splice where it will go into 1 wire then into the fusible link. If the fusible link is not burned, simply match the gauge wire coming from it. You should never use anything smaller in diameter than 10 gauge wire for the charging system. If you want to replace the fusible link, you can run separate white wires from the alternator to the positive battery post with individual fuses or fusible links. I would recommend each wire have its own Maxi fuse holder with a fuse no less than 60 amps each.

My dad's '95 Buick Lesabre Custom does not want to keep the battery charging, I've cleaned all the terminals, checked all the grounds and still no luck. I've replaced the alternator and...


It most likely is a fusible link on the starter,connect a large wire(better to be larger than the one that is on there already)to the back of the alternator and go to the positive side of the battery,or to the starter hot post,where the battery positive cable connects to the starter,this will take care of the problem,no fusible link will be needed.The fusible link really hinders the charging capacity to the battery and running of the engine,cause it carries less amps in the smaller fusible link wire,this will solve the problem most likely.

Where do i trace my orange/blue wire to from alternator? i have new alternator and batteries, but won't charge. will charge if i jump orange/blue to positive post. Any good suggestions? Thanks Phil


The orange/light blue wire is connected to the red (positive) wire from the battery, through a fusible link (or two links depending on engine size) to pin #3 of the voltage regulator at the alternator. The fusible link will be in the harness so you may have to disassemble the harness. The fusible link is probably blown. This was probably caused by the defective alternator/regulator assembly.

According to my diagram, it appears to go from the red batt wire to a gray 12 gauge fusible link, into a brown 18 gauge link, then turns into the orange/light blue wire and to the alternator.

(A fusible link is a piece of wire that acts like a fuse and will burn out, opening the circuit when amperage above its rating. This protects the circuit and lessens the chance of fire).
