1991 plymouth acclaim shuts off while driving

It just turns off when you are driving down the road most of the time it starts right up but their are times you have to wait 5 or 10 min before it will start. it happens about every other day roughly put on 40 miles a day

We have the same exact problem with our 1991 Plymouth Acclaim! We can be driving along, car just quits on its own! No warning, nothing! It usually does it when we're going about 15-20 m.p.h. and most of the time it starts right up after quitting but a couple of times it took about 10 minutes to get it started. We've had a new fuel pump put in, a new modular put in and it still does it! Very frustrating! I'm beginning to think it's the fuel filter maybe getting clogged up or an electrical problem somehow! I was going about 30 m.p.h. once a couple weeks ago and it shut off and turned itself back on before I even had time to try to start it! Very weird! That's the one and only time it's done that though. I heard it just go silent, the car was coasting and it just turned itself back on! Weird!

We may have fixed the problem! We had replaced numerous other parts and it would still die on us! Once we replaced the ignition pick up module located in the distributor, it quit dying on us! We've driven it for 2 days now and it hasn't quit at all! Yahoo!

This might sound a bit odd but check your ignition switch contacts for wear.Sounds like it could be a bad connect in there somewhere.I dont have any clue as to your abilty to try this yourself .If you need a hand let me know.

My guess would be the transaxle.
Pump, clutches, valve body, solenoids, torque converter, and so on.
A mechanic might give you some suggestions after a test drive.

1991 plymouth acclaim 3.0l v6 mitsubishi engine approx. 78,000 miles. sometimes but not all the time the engine will cut off when you come to a stop. it will crank up but will stall when stopping again,...

I'd pull the AIS motor ( automatic idle speed ) of side of throttle body and give it and the port it comes out of a good spray of throttle body cleaner, especially the Pintle ( pointed part) and re-install it and try it. If it cures it great, and if it starts to act up again a while down the road, replace it. Also referred to as IAC sometimes.( automatic idle control)

My 1991 plymouth acclaim went dead and won't start. I dont't have fire to the distributor?

I had the same problem with my 1991 Plymouth Acclaim 3.0 liter engine. Check to see if your SBEC (computer located next to car battery) has gone out. Replacing it should solve your problem.

1991 Plymouth Acclaim stalls

One of the more common problems with the 2.5L & 2.2L engines that suffered the symptoms your describing, such as, starts & runs good, then at any given time would just quit, not start, but after sitting a while, or by the time the mechanic gets to it, it starts right up, or you sit on the side of the road for 20 min. or half hour then away it goes for a while longer, then quits again down the road. There is a pick-up plate under the distributor cap & rotor, with the wiring plug coming from it. 90% of the time, it's defective, and cuts out especially, but not limited to, more often when weather is hot.
