Question about Ford E-350

1 Answer

I have a 1987 Ford e 350 motorhome with a 460 c.i. engine. The unit has been stored for about 1 year, with a battery Tender hooked up. My son took it camping and did not get hat, after he stopped for gas it would not start low battery. So he called a friend who is a mechanic and said to replace the battery, so we did and my son drove to the place he was staying about 25 miles away while moving to a new campsite and couple of days later the same problem low battery. The mechanic said it's not charging and would need a new alternator w attached regulator. So he installed this and still the same problem the it wont charge the battery, it's discharging. what could it be??

Often times, with new battery and new alternator installed and still no charge, the problem is corrosion of wires and connections, often the GROUND connection, either at the battery or on the engine.
Recommend - clean all connections.
Also, are there any signs of mice that may have homesteaded anywhere in the vehicle, given that the vehicle sat for one year? May be that wires were eaten through...

Need to find a diagram or layout of the belt system in a a Ford Econoline 1987 E-350 7.5l Motorhome/RV

have you try ed looking under hood? if not located under hood check door jamb . if that don't reveal anything of help go to a parts store and ask them to print out a diagram. If that don't work find a van the same year as your motor home and most likely the belts will be ran the same way. you may need to go to a junk yard to find it.

1988 460 motorhome starting problem

When its hooked up, you should be able to put 12 volts on the little stud on the solenoid and it should start. One large stud will have 12 volts on it, so just jump it right there. Did you get the wires in the right place. The solenoid should have 1 large wire going down to the starter. Be sure the battery cables are clean and tight ( both ends) Check battery voltage when cranking, should go to 10-11 volts. Check voltage between negative terminal on battery and engine, should be ZERO when cranking. The solenoid has 2 large studs, make sure the battery positive wire and all the other wires are hooked to this stud, the other large stud should just have the wire going to the starter.

I had same problem in varius trucks and motorhomes with the same engine size (460)and this is caused by excesive heat from the engine in all 460's,when hot if I stoped at a gas station to fill, once I tryed to start it again it felt like the battery was almost dead and bearly turned the engine over.what I did was that I added an after market engine oil cooler and that fixed the problem.
