Whats making it run rough and shut off?

Hi Brian, I'm glad to help! First, when the engine shuts down you need to know if its loosing FUEL or if its NOT FIRING. This will send you in the right direction of diagnosing the problem, BECAUSE: It could be anything from a Shut-Down-Relay, a Bad Fuel Pump, a Engine Control Module, a Crank or Cam Sensor to various other things. Did you have battery disconnected or dead recently?

Try to place ignition in run without starting engine for 3 minutes (shut off all accessories and lights etc..). Then shut it off and then start it. Should relearn the idle.

If this doesn't fix the problem, unplug the MAF sensor, if it runs fine with it unplugged, its the MAF sensor.

Exactly what happened on my wife's 01'.

If the engine seems to run fine over 1450 RPM maybe there is a vacuum hose leaking or EGR valve is slightly stuck open. Any help from the OBD II trouble codes? Or is there simply no MIL and no stored information in the OBD II computer read at the local parts store through the connector by the drivers knee?

It would appear that the Black smoke is unburnt fuel, meaning Spark or timing could also be out. Check you plug and point gaps. If you rebuilt the carby, float level is crucial also check the needle and set to ensure it is shutting off the fuel, if it is not shutting off, it will just flood the engine. Not sure what carby you have but I woud pull out the jets/power valve and replace them. Some carbys have a small ball bearing to control fuel, if that was lost that could be it. Pull up an exploded diagram of the carby and do it again. I know its time consuming, but it will be peace of mind. Good luck

You need to find oput what you loose when the truck shuts off, all you need is Air, Fuel , and spark to run one of the three are droppuig out when it stalls and will not run. Chech the carb for gas it sounds like you have a weak fuel pump.

Remove your ignition module and take it to a parts house to be tested. This is common behavior for a failing module after it gets warm. Have them check it several times to insure it gets hot during testing.

I'd go for a free code scan first at one of the major auto parts stores, then you have an idea at least where to concentrate your efforts. Saves money in the long run, and if you prefer, write them down, and get back to us for some help.

seem like you got the same problem as my scion xa, check the fuel pressure regulater. bad regulater some time smell like leak gas. auto zone might cause you about $80.00.
