Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

1997 Pontiac Grand Prix feels unstable in the rear on bumpy roads

Especially in colder weather when the road is rougher and the suspension is stiffer it feels like you have no control over your rear end. The road I drive is like a washboard and it feels like my rear end is just floating all over the road. Like it is just bouncing around. The bushings are not bad, probably haven't ever been replaced but look ok yet. Both mechanics I've talked to tell me that it drives like any other grand prix they have driven. I find it hard to believe that all of them drive this badly. It is scary to drive sometimes. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix gt and it behaves the same way. he problem is the forward fixed or rear adjustable track bar. hey both connect via the same long bolt and nut by the wheel then go up at an angle to the center of the car the rear one is simple however when replacement the fixed one the bolt is located in the rear crossmember and there is not enough clearance to allow the bolt to come all the way out so u can remove the track bar bercause the bolt will hit the gas tank so you will have to lower that to get the new one in. here is also a 3rd rear track bar, it is only about half as long and it runs from the wheel to a forward position making it run back to front instead of from wheel to center. Good Luck! and remember there are three track bars for the driver side and 3 for the passenger side not including the rear stabilizer bar.

You need to have all the suspension components checked for excessive wear. Also check the wheel bearing for noise.

If you hear a clacking sound esp. while turning. Sound like your CV joints (constant velocity) or Front Wheel Drive axle.

Loud knocking noise in rear when going over rough patches in parking lot or road.

well other than suspension components the only thing i can think of is a really toasted wheel bearing, or a loose spare tire, gas tank mount or busted weld on the unibody

My vitz 1999 model runs fine on a smooth road but when driving on a bumpy road the car is so unstable goes up and down so much as if wanting to overturn

bounce a corner of the car to see if you have more than a bounce and a rebound,if more, then fit new shockers, always in pairs, front and rear.

It is normal, if you're using low profile tyres or having too high tyre pressure. Observe the manual.

1995 bonneville what does the perform ride and touring ride buttons mean

The "perform ride" stiffens the suspension and the "touring ride" loosens the suspension. (bumpy roads & smooth roads)

May be time for new rear struts & spring assemblies. It doesn't say what year or mileage but by the sounds of it, it certainly resembles worn shocks/struts at least. Sometimes it's just as cheap & safer to replace strut & spring assembly now days.
