Likely you have a shift control module malfunction. Module is probably on the right side fender in the engine compartment. Check to see if you have one (some do and some dont... go figure...I've got a 91 & 95... I have about five different diagrams and NONE apply to my vehicles)
SOURCE: Transmision Shifting Problem
Was the fluid you drained red or black? did it smell like trans or gear oil? With linkage disconnected, could you put trans in park by moving the lever on the side of the unit? Oil condition is likely a separate issue...most "blown" transmissions generally have normal operation of shift, it just dosen't do what you tell it to. two things likely going on are: linkage problem and likely in need of fluid/filter change.

I would suggest you need a transfer case. pull the bottom drain plug and see what comes out. could also be front spider gears if you have quadra trac. the front is what holds park not the rear on that setup. good luck

If the shifter is moving from Drive to
Neutral, then I would think the shift cable is in need of adjustment or
the detents are worn out. I would suggest letting a transmission shop
look at it for you.

Summary: On certain sport utility vehicles, if a
driver has not placed the shifter lever fully into the "park" position
and leaves the vehicle running, the vehicle may unexpectedly move
rearward after seeming to be stable.
Consequence: Inadvertent movement of the vehicle could result in a crash.
Fix: Dealers will install a secondary detent
system to the floor shifter assembly. DaimlerChrysler sent interim
notices to owners concerning this problem on March 22, 2002. Owner
notification began September 23, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles
to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not
receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact
DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Your shift selector linkage. Make sure the cable is actually streched, and not just loose at either end. Commonly when it doesn't function correctly the wable adjustment is loose at the transmission. It an arm with a solid linkage to it as well as posibly the cable directly tto another arm that is attached to a shaft entering the transmission. This is where the adjustment for the shift selector is gets paired with the correct transmission shift arm position.
