Question about 2002 Audi TT

Overheating You may have solved this already, but if your fans are not working, it may just be your fuses. The fuses are found on the battery and are 3 fuses. Replace those and the fans may start working. My fans are now working, but I'm still overheating. I think it's the thermostat.

My fans are fine, so I'm thinking definitely the Thermostat. It's a pain in the *** to replace, but it's very cheap if I do it myself. We'll see...

Try to see if you can send direct power to the fans. meaning from the fan electrical connector to the car battery and see if the fans start turning. It sounds to me like something is grounded out and not allowing it to work. Especially after everything you have changed already.

I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

What do I do to fix the fans? The car is overheating?

if a bad temperature sensor the fan might not come on at all, even though the engine is overheating.check the fan relay and or fuses. if all is fine, run a wire from battery positive to positive connection on fan, to see if the fans work themselves. you may or may not need to ground the fans. My 2002 Mazda 626 is overheating! I have already put in a new radiator, a new thermostat, and replaced a hose that had 2 spring coils. Realized the radiator fan closet to the battery (that should go off...

Have you confirmed the water pump is working? If the car is moving at 10-20 MPH you should have enough air going across the radiator to prevent overheating in a moderate climate at this time of year.

Hi i have a 1989 toyota cam my cooling fans are not coming on any more i also had the thermostat change and the coolant drained and replaced what could it be please help. jeanette

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You need to check your fuses for the coolant fans. If the fuse is good, you either have a bad wire or a bad fan. You can always hook up a direct wire to the fan from the battery to get it to work. If it does, the wires are bad. Check for leaks and check the coolant cap. You could have a bad head gasket. A bad water pump can cause overheating, along with the valve and impeller. Check your radiator as well. Anyone of these parts can cause overheating. You could have a bad coolant sensor also. The most common is the thermostat and since you already changed that, next would be the water pump. But if the fans are not working, that is your problem. You probably have a bad wire somewhere. You can get a wire and splice it with the fan wire and run the wire to the battery or fuse box to see if the fans will come on. If they don't, you need a new one.

My van 99 dodge caravan has started overheating. I noticed the radiator fan does not turn on. The fuse is good and I looked for a relay for the fan and found none. Thinking it could be the the fan itself...

One of the simplest ways would be to disconnect connection from fan and use jumper wires from a 12v-14v cordless drill battery, or the vehicle battery to go directly to fan wires connector. If the fan works, the problem is elsewhere, if not, replace fan.

CEL is ON. OBD code P2181. I already replaced the ECT 3 mo ago due to OBD code P0118.

P2181 is a overheating engine.
Can be:
Bad fan themoswitch, temp sensor themostat water pump impeller fan motor or fuse on battery
check to see if fans work by turning on Air Conditioner (fans should run with A/C on). Turn A/C off, warm engine, check to see if fans come on, if they do NOT it may be thermo switch on radiator on lower left side, has 3 wire plug, takes 1-1/8" wrench/socket to remove.  This thermo switch controls fans when temp reaches 195F, if fans do not come on at engine temp 190-195F try  replace switch VW part number: 1J0-959--481-A  You can verify if the switch is bad by shorting wire 1 and 2 (fans should come on when jumpered).
