If the fan isn't working check the fuse/relay for it. most of the time when a car overheats it is usually the thermostat (cheap and easy fix) or the water pump. if this helps please leave feedback.

Have you tried changing the fan relays? Sounds like they may be stuck on.

COOLANT FAN NOT COMING ON WHEN CAR REACH HIGH TEMP

the FSM covers this. it states the exact temp.
if it must come , in view of facts,
(about 250F ,using a pyro gun)
then it can only be these:
with a volt meter this is childs play, got 12v to fan, . ?
1: bad fan, (hot wire it, does it work, yes, skip to #1)
2> wire to fan broken,. that means the connectors too.
3: The relay that drives this fan is bad,
4: the signal that drives the relay coil is dead.

easy as 1,2,3,4 , you can do it in any order, and get the same answer.
and is covered in USA 100% at alldata dot come.
you never once hinted at location.... sadly.

Radiator fan not turning on

Run the engine for about 20 mins. Check if the temp meter goes high. Fan will work automatically when needs.

If not working after 20 mins, it should need a technisian.

Overheating

If the temp goes up at idle and is fine when your driving at highway speeds than the most likley problem is the cooling fans are not working.

the first thing you can do is check to make sure both of the cooling fan fuses are good. you can also check continuity of the cooling fans with an ohm meter.

The cooling fans are turned on by the low and high speed cooling fan relays. you can try swapping the relays.

If the fans still do not come on than you will need a scan tool to diagnose further since the PCM is what controls the fan relays.

01 grand.prix ac fan switch only works on high. has a duel temp controller when you turn fan off the only way fan comes back on is to move the temp controller levers

Hi!!
When the Blower Motor Resistor (controls blower speeds) goes bad, the blower motor works only on HIGH SPEED. REPLACE IT.
BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR Removal & Installation
  • Disconnect negative battery cable.
  • Remove right lower instrument panel insulator panel.
  • Disconnect blower resistor connector located behind right side of dash.
  • Remove blower resistor screws and blower resistor.
To install, reverse removal procedure
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa!!

Ok, so I have a radiator fan issue, working back from the fan I can jump the wires and they operate fine, checking the relays with an ohm meter the relays appear to be in proper working order, now checking...

The fan works from a temp sensor on the engine. You did not give model so its just a shot. You need to check the temp sensor. Now it can also be a blown fuse, you said they appear to be ok, pull any and visual check to see if blown. The check engine light can be just coming on when the engine temps gets to high. The Chevy system uses 2 sensors.

Hot engine possible radiator fan problem?

That's a definite possibility. Check if your a/c turns the fan on. If it does then the fan part is ok at idle anyway If the temp goes a little high, that can trigger the check gauges light. When you go faster, the regular air currents cool off the radiator instead of the fan.So you may have something there.

Good luck in fixing this problem.
