1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Multi-rib belt Removal & Replacement

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee - multi-rib belt replacement. My Jeep has almost 150K miles and I have owned it since 50K and have not replaced the multi-rib belt. I just lost one of the ribs today, so I quicky pulled over the vehicle as I heard something starting to wind or unwind.

I don't have a manual, but I will buy one if I need to. I am trying to assess if I can handle the project myself. Will this replacement project just include the belt, or do things like tensioners or pulleys need to also be replaced? Do I need any special tools or can I just use handtools?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Motor1258,

I will give it a try. I forgot to mention that it's the 4.0L 6 cylinder. I only heard some winding the last few minutes the car was running.

Thanks for your great and quick assistance,

    John

Check on upper rad shroud or under hood for routing diagram. Depending on what engine, procedure may vary a little. I wouldn't panic on replacing anything other than belt unless you noticed something noisy under hood in last while.
If not up to it, a mechanic should be able to do it for you in a few minutes usually, but won't hurt to ask before, just in case.

You may find on that engine with power steering that all adjustment is made at power steering pump. Loosening mounting bolts on pump then backing off an adjustment bolt to move pump for removal of belt, then tighten adjustment bolt back up to proper tension, then re-tighten mounting bolts. If no power steering it should have the automatic tensioner type that you put proper size ratchet & socket on bolt in center & rotate clockwise to relieve tension.(carefully)

They have an automatic tensioner, like a spring loaded pulley. They are usually quite easy to pull back using a power bar or spanner. For the routing diagram, click here

2004 jeep grand cherokee limited makes a noise

Sounds like a loose belt, Depending on what engine etc., it may need to be changed or if you have adjustment, tightened. When adjustment or replacement done, is a good time to check all pulleys. If your not up to it, an adjustment should not cost too much, few minutes work in most cases, if belt needs changing, price of belt & a little more labor involved.
