You'll need to change the computer and therefore at least some of the wiring.

Got an '87 firebird that has been pieced together, looks like 5.7L T.P.I. engine. How can I identify what motor it is for sure? thanks

Look at the fuel injector cover if its fuel injected on top most say it there, it will say 2.8L or 5.7L if it is a v6 (6 spark plug wires) chances are its a 2.8 if it has V8 (8 spark plug wires) more likely to be a 5.7. Check your ECM if its what came with that motor if it is the original GM part the number on it should be 1227165 if it is it should be 5.0 or 5.7 more likely the 5.7.

What transmission the five speed in my 3.1 v6 firebird

yes u can put a V8 in, just need the correct wiring harness and emission parts, u can use any of the medium to heavy duty 5 speeds made by Borg Warner, model T5 chevy bolt pattern, which by the way is most likely what is already in your car.
