Use a large breaker bar. Keep the truck on the ground, e-brake locked, and give it all you got. ( if you have access to air and an impact this job will be alot easier.

Rear differential leaking on ford f-350 super duty

if you have never done one its best to take to dealer because you have to remove drive shaft and then rear pinion nut and remove seal the tricky part is you have to buy new crush sleeve and thats what sets your pinon depth so that pinion rides in middle of ring gear its called setting your pinion depth if over tighten will hurt bearings and or ring gear and if under tighten will be verry noisey and cause ring and pinion failure best to let someone with special tools and knows what thier doing i use to do all chevy diff at my old dealer your use inch torque wrench to measure the drag on pinion nut and then use 1/2 inch impack to tighten the nut people freak because impack is rated at 600 ft pds but your using inch torque wrench to check drag not how tight nut is good luck

remove the rear wheels and brakedrums or calipers and rotors depending on the model remove the rear diff cover there is a large round pin in the center of the carrierer rotate the carier untill u see a 8mm bolt on the pass side through the pin remove the bolt slide the pin out push the axles in and remove the u shaped clips and slide the axles out

Siren sound from rear of vehicle

Sounds like the rear diff is causing it.

Check rear pinon for it being loose which means the bearing is worn out.
To check it make sure the truck is in park & can't roll then go under the truck to the rear diff and grab the drive shaft close to the rear diff and try to move it up and down, there should not be any play in it. If it does the rear pinon bearing is gone and needs to be replaced before it breaks.

If there is no play it may be internal rear diff problems ..

Note: If you go off roading keep in mind even that your diff's looks sealed but there not and will get mud/water into by the breather tubes causing damage. Make sure all diff's are flushed after off roading.

To replace pinon bearing you need to pull wheels and the brake drums off next pull cover off the back of the rear end (make sure you have a drain pan under rear end) next turn dive shaft till you see a small bolt remove bolt pull center pin out push axle in pull c clips out pull axels out remove four bolts holding ring and spider gears remove gears assembly next remove drive shaft remove bolt from pinon push pinon in remove seal and bearing

Loose collar on rear end were pinion hooks to drive shaft after it fell off. it is large in diameter and is very thick and heavy stuck between rear end and pinion were the drive shaft hooks up in the rear....

It is the pinion yoke flange to the driveshaft. NO you can not cut it off. A large nut in the middle of it has to be removed. The nut attaches to the pinion driven gearand if cut off a new gear will be needed

On my 2005 mustang gt the rear dif has a leak where the driveshaft connects to it. What do I do?

There's a seal there called a pinion seal that will need to be replaced. Take the driveshaft loose from the rear end. You will then see a large nut, probably 1" or larger. You will need to remove this with an air impact wrench. The nut is so tight that you would not be able to get it off by hand. Then the flange comes off that the driveshaft was bolted to, and there you will see the seal that needs replacing. It can be removed with a small hammer and a screwdriver. Put some grease on the new one and carefully hammer it in, being sure to keep it straight. It will fight you, but keep after it. Once you get it started, it will go the rest of the way pretty easily. Then reverse the process, being sure to get the big nut real tight.

If you have that much play in the pinion, your pinion is getting worn, or the nut is loose. You may be able to find a rear end at an auto wrecker cheaper than anything.

Leak at rear diff (pinion seal?) 03 4X4 ford ranger

the part is called the pinion flange seal, pull the drive shaft, remove the large nut on the flange the drive shaft connects to and remove the flange, then pry out the old seal and lube the lip of the new seal with motor oil and press it into the opening. The 7.5 hour estimate is way wrong, about 1.5 hours labor and $4 for the part.
