1996 M.Carlo 3.4 Ltr V-6 erratic idle in park. tap gas and engine rpm races like too much gasflow/or/air leak at intake?

can be anything you stated from a vac leak is easiest and first to check

any trouble codes stored? free obd 2 scan at local autozone or other car part store

but #2 dead cylinder is definitely a problem; you find out via trouble code scan? dunno if you already had done a tune up to write off the spark plugs

only other way to check that valve problem is a compression tester <shrugs>

good luck to you; you're hunting in the right direction, but no one can give you a definitive answer

Why does my 2000 Monte Carlo SS pulsate between 50-60 mph?

check the TPS sensor as it could have a bad spot in it. also the trans maybe going in and out of overdrive at that speed.

Car won't idle

First if the "service engine" light is on I would have a local retailer or garage see what the codes are. For possible TPS, IAC, or mass air flow problems. TPS being "throttle position sensor" IAC being "idle air control" If a light is not currently present, listen under the hood for a hissing noise or signs of a vaccum leak.

I smell gas, but not all the time. It is most when my car idles for a minute. I have not noticed a gas leak.

this issue may be caused by a faulty fuel pressure regulator... next time you smell gas, pop the hood and look at the lines running to your regulator and you may notice gas leaking on the metal line running from your tank to the regulator. this would indicate that you need to replace the regulator; should cost about $250-$300

On a 1980 monte carlo 305 engine what would make it stall to the point off shuttin down then smoove out all while the choke and volt lights are on and a plug or two foul

Sounds, like the Mass Air flow scencer.
I think you, Can take the car to Auto Zone and
have them test it.
The MAF WILL make the Engine idle change UP & DOWN.

Wont keep idle, car stalls out

I had this same problem on my 2005 monte carlo, took mechanic a while to figure out it was the idle air control valve. They also replace the idle air control motor.

2002 ls monte carlo "shudders" between 2,000-2400 rpm.....

My monte carlo would hit 2nd gear and bog down and not shift properly until it got to the last gear. I had the catalytic converter replaced and that fixed that problem. (It also created another, but not near as bad)
