It's not a temperature issue. The Ac turns off when set past lvl 1.

  • bartersauce Jun 27, 2009

It's a 0-5 knob. At 1 the AC lights come on and you can hear the compressor kick in. At 2+ they go out and the compressor shuts down.

The MOST likely answer is you need a charge which can be done at home for about 35 bucks as apposed to going to a shop.

Is this a variable speed switch? As apposed to a 4 or 5 speed switch? If so your problem most likley is in the climate control module. Unfortunately the only people that can make that determination is the dealer, sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

COMPRESSER KICKS ON (blows cold)only ON LOW IF YOU TURN BLOWER ON ANTHING BUT 1 the ac light goes out and compressor kicks off, changed the climate control thing and that didn't fix it!!

that sounds like normal operation to me. might be low on charge therefore won't kick in on high speed due to not damaging the system and running the ac compressor to cause damage. have the system checked at a local shop. if ok, then recheck that everything is plugged in. all sensor on the ac lines. sounds like it might even be the low side cut off switch or plugged orfice tube or something along those lines...best left to a professional with a machine where they can monitor pressures, and proper operation and see what's going on.

I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 that will blow cold and hot air for only a few minutes. After that is only ambient air temps. It is a 5.7 ltr, automatic with only one set of climate controls. The heater core...

you say it will blow cold and hot air for only a few minutes. You don't say but I assume you mean will blow cold a few min. when turned on AC max , blow hot only a few min. when turned to heater hot. Assuming thats the situation and you say AC charged and shows good on the low side -you should charge the AC to a full charge on the low side will cause problems with the AC air compressor kicking on and off. I suggest while the engine is running and turned to AC cold max watch the AC air compressor clutch to see if it does indeed kick on and off if so charge completely. As far as the heater make certain you coolant is all the way to the top and the best way to do this is when engine is completely cold remove radiator cap and fill completely and completely close cap then fill overflow container just to the cold level. That should fix your problem.

it's either low (in spite of your readings) or your a/c clutch is not working correctly or you have too big an air gap in the clutch.
First, just disconnect the 2 pin connector from the a/c pressure cycling swithc and jumper the 2 pins with a wire to force the clutch to stay engaged. See if it blows cold then, and stays engaged. You can run this way for about 15 minutes before you have to pull the plug.
report reulsts.

CHECK THE AC AND HEATER CONTROL FUSE.MORE LIKELY FUSE BLOWED BECAUSE AC COMPRESSOR COULD HAVE FAILED IF LOW SIDE IS OVER 100 PSI. THE REED VALVE PLATE IN COMPRESSOR PROBABLY DAMAGED CAUSED COMPRESSOR FAILURE BLOWED THE HVAC CONTROLS FUSE. HAVE AC SHOP CHECK IT OUT.

On my 2004 xterra, the compressor operates, but a/c blows hot air. i have charged it and that lasted 1 day. now hot air again.

The engine drive belt operates the AC compressor. The OUTER pulley on the compressor , where the belt is, is always turning when the engine is running. When the AC is turned on, a CLUTCH on the compressor is engaged and connects the outer pulley to the compressor shaft. So, when the compressor is actually working, the outer pulley AND the inner ring just behind the outer pulley are both turning. When the AC is off (or not working correctly, as in your case), only the outer pulley turns.

It sounds like there is a major leak somewhere in the system. If you want to try and to find the leak yourself, there is a product in auto parts stores that is made for this. It is a canister, like the refrigerant used to charge the system, that will blow out a dye in the system, where the leak is. This can help you identify where the leak is ....If this info was helpful, please post... Thanks...

A.C. NOT BLOWING COLD

My AC went out suddenly and it turns out I got a major leak in one of the tubes in the AC system and thus warm air. When I bought the first can of refrigerant it didn't take much to get the pressure back where it should be. After some good advise I learned that my compressor was kicking on and off (you'll hear it cycle on and of every few seconds or so) and not STAYING on. Turns out because the system was drained of coolant I had to fill the tank a little at a time and actually go over the recommended pressure to force the air out of the line and get enough coolant in the system to kick the compressor on.
Turns out it was all for not...given the hole in my system it just leaked right out. I live in GA and still don't have it fixed; I was quoted $800 to fix it and figured I could live with it.
