Question about 1989 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Engine does not turn when I try to start the car. Battery is fine because lights and radio work. Makes a quiet rumbling noise when I try to start the ignition.

Probably a bad starter. The only way to tell is if the starter draw is too high or too low. Put a volt meter across battery when trying to start. From 12.5, it should drop to around 10 volts. If it stays above 11 or below 9, probably starter problem.

Sounds like your starter or solenoid you can try to tap the starter with a hammer be relize that it may damage it but if it is bad yor going to have to replace it any way as long as you dont beat it to death youll be fine

The battery is dead or not connected tight enough. Bring the battery to an auto parts store, and have it tested, it sounds like it's dead or VERY weak, that's what those signs and symptoms are telling me.

Mazda protege makes a squeaking noise when I start driving?

If your Mazda Tribute's engine has a rumbling noise when you start it, this is most likely from the drive belt. You will need to replace it.

Won't start but has radio and lights etc.makes no noise when you try to start it. No previous problems.....has gas..can't think of any thing else...thanks for any help

Hi! First of all please have your battery checked. The lights and radio may be working but may not be enough to turn on the car. If the battery is fine, I believe its gonna be a starter problem. The solenoid may be burnt not giving enough power to turn the flywheel of the car thats why it wont start. Hope this helps and have a good one!

I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla that won't start

Radio and lights can work with weak battery, too weak to turn starter.

Noise when shutting off maybe dieseling due to fuel mixture too rich or timing off.

When you say car won't start do you mean starter turns but engine does not start, or do you mean starter does not turn.

Only makes a clicking noise and wont start

First, remove the battery terminals and clean them. Check that the ground wire on the block is tight and clean and the wire at the starter is also good. If you have 12v at the main starter cable and12v at the smaller (trigger) wire next to it with the key turned to the "start" position, it's likely the starter is bad (providing you can turn the engine by hand with key switch off) Make sure that the battery has 12v before starting diagnosis...radio etc. draw far less than the starter does. Even if relatively new, if the charging system isn't working, it will draw down the battery in less than an hour while driving..
