My mother bought the car 2 years ago and since the day she bought it on rare occasions, around 3000 rpms the car will violently misfire/ backfire it doesn't stall the car but it does drop the speed of the car considerably, it will happen at any speed the only consistency is the Rpms, after the change it will jump the rpms up to around 6000 rpm and i have to let off the gas almost compleetly before they return to normal. my question is, what could be causing this and is it something that could cause irreversible damage to the car. i have a friend who owns a diagnostic tool, and it came back clean for codes, so im wondering if its the timing on the car..... im stumped please help.

The previous solution to check the idle air contol is in the correct area but needs some clarification.
The idle control is accomplished by two parts: Throttle position sensor ( $35 at Autozone) and idle contol valve approx $190. I replaced the throttle position sensor about a week ago and it runs perfect
to date but am a skeptic after almost two years of dealer incompetance. I researched all the sensors and failure symptoms on the internet and the throttle position sensor failure symptoms matched mine
exactly. See http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Throttle _Position_Sensor

Engine performance problem causes are many. Try this first.
1. Disconnect the battery cables (both of them)
2. Touch/connect the postive and negative battery cables together for 30 seconds.
3. Reconnect the cables to the battery.
4. Drive vehicle to see if this solved the problem. Let me know what happens.

could be afew things. vacuum leak, one dud HT lead, could be the water temperature sensor, O2 sensor, best to get it checked and get it read for fault codes
