Question about 1996 Toyota Avalon

I can not get the shifter out of park. I got into my car and attempted to put the car in reverse, but it is locked up. I've tried, what I think is the release on the console, but that didn't help.

The steering wheel wasn't cranked one way or the other. This problem has never happend before. There is a emergency release on the console, but it doesn't work. It is still locked. I appreciate your response...

Needs a new shifter assembly then.

Like I said, if the fault release button doesn't work, 9 out of 10 times it is the shifter assembly. Could be a locked up cable, but most likely the shifter.

Make sure that the steering wheel is not turned hard in either direction. When the power steering turns off it puts added pressure on the key. turn the wheel one way or another will solve this

Gear shifter is in Park, but dash reads it's in Reverse. Car won't turn over because it is in Reverse now.

You have to locate where the park ignition switch is located. Some are on the transmission and some are in the column under the dash. It probably got moved.

How do I tighten the shifter cable

GM issued a service bulletin for difficult shifting. The cause was foreign material causing the shift indicator to stick. When the shifter is moved, the slide becomes damaged. The correction was to replace the damaged shift indicator slide with a revised part

The car starts, but the gearshift wont move from park

Usually a problem with the brake switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
That circuit would need to be tested.

My car will not start unless I push the shifter allt he way up into PARK

sounds to me like you need to have shifter cable or park neutral position switch adjusted. The car is thinking that you are in "reverse" and it will not start. When you push the shifter forward it turns off the signal telling the car that it is in reverse and it will start, because you are putting pressure on it making it think that it is in "park"

2006 Altima won't shift into reverse or park

Is there any warning lights or malfunction besides this?? There are three main parts that may cause this: Park/Neutral safety switch(located on the transmission), Brake pedal switch(located at the brake pedal), Shift lock solenoid(located below the shifter). P/N safety switch prevents the shifter from shifting out of (P) or shifting into (R/P) while vehicle is in motion. Brake pedal switch sends a signal to release the shifter lock to shift out of park. Shift lock, locks the shifter as describe above and is located at the shifter base. I recommend inspection/replacement of the shift lock solenoid and P/N safety switch as its an intermitted problem. Hopefully this helps

My renault megane automatic is stuck in reverse and won't start

Hi all,
I have a 2002 Renault Megane 1.6 Convertible and experienced exactly the same fault. Needed a team effort but we found a very easy quick fix to this problem. If you take the plastic cover off from under the gear shifter, you will notice a release button covered by a rubber cover. Pressing this release button allows the gear shifter to move from its locked/jammed position. (This is not the fix but it helps with the fix).
If you are fortunate enough to have a 2nd person available, have them poke their head under the bonnet to watch the Gearbox cable move....while you are shifting the gear shifter inside the vehicle. Your partner will see that a cable with a plastic locking device (right hand side of the engine cover) has popped off the shifter for the transmission. Move the shifter until you can physically put the plastic locking device back on the shifter mechanism and your all good to go. No need for that new gearbox that you might have been quoted on!! An easy fix that I am surprised no mechanically minded professional/body in the world has volunteered the solution to. I wonder why????

Good luck!

Gear locks when i park on even a slight incline

ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!

Van won't lock into reverse or park all the time.

it is either the shifter or the cable, I would go with a broken part in the shifter linkage. Detrim the steering column and see what shows up, very easy just 4 screw I think.
